For a long time, Frank Herbert’s Dune, which influenced George Lucas’s galaxy far, far away, was considered unfilmable before Denis Villeneuve took things into his own hands. And with the sequel on the Gates, which is set to tie all the loose threads from the first Dune, fans are already asking for a confirmation on part 3, and Zendaya is down for it.
While it’s still yet to be confirmed by the studios if Dune 3 eventually will get greenlit, the Spider-Man: No Way Home star has no problem returning to explore Herbert’s Dune Messiah.
Zendaya Is Just a Call Away From Returning for More Dune
Although Zendaya has been one of the busiest Hollywood A-listers in recent times, both on the small and big screen, her hefty schedule isn’t going to be a problem for her working bond with Villeneuve. Having loved working with the perfectionist, the Challengers Star expressed that if the Sicario director calls for her, she will be ready to play her part.
Furthermore, the actor shared (via Fandango) that she was taken aback after reading Dune Messiah. She stressed that there was nobody better than Villeneuve to handle the story.
“Would we be down? I mean of course,” Zendaya said. “Anytime Denis calls it’s a yes from me, at least. I’m excited to see what happens. I started Messiah and I was like, ‘Woah, I’m only shooting the first movie. Let me just go back to the first one.’ It’s so much to take in, and I think there’s no better hands with better care and love for it than him [Villeneuve].”
While she is excited to see what the future holds, considering Villeneuve is a perfectionist who “doesn’t want to share things unless he’s fully ready”, Zendaya said she will wait until he’s ready.
Making Dune a Trilogy Would Be a Dream Come True for Denis Villeneuve
Fortunately for fans, Denis Villeneuve is completely on board with the concept of a threequel, as he expressed that getting to make Dune a trilogy would be a dream come true. However, per his interview with Empire, Dune 3 is yet to be officially confirmed. But the director did stress that “there are words on paper” for a third entry, as he shared his possible direction for it.
“If I succeed in making a trilogy, that would be the dream. Dune Messiah was written in reaction to the fact that people perceived Paul Atreides as a hero,” Villeneuve explained. “Which is not what he wanted to do. My adaptation [of Dune] is closer to his idea that it’s a warning.”
If a third entry does come to fruition, which both fans and Zendaya would hope for, this will mark the end of Villeneuve’s stay in Arrakis, as he explained the books after that become “more… esoteric.”
Dune: Part Two will hit theatres on 15 March 2024.
