In the final lap of One Piece, the villains are more powerful than ever. It also needs to be a crucial member of the Straw Hats who has shown character development and depth and has fans attached to them. The one character who suits all of these requirements and more is Zoro.
All of these together make Zoro the perfect sacrificial pawn. If Eiichiro Oda truly wanted to impact the other main characters of the show, then Zoro would be the prime target to take out.

Will Zoro Achieve His Dream of Becoming the Greatest Swordsman?
Zoro’s biggest dream is to become the strongest swordsman on the face of the Earth. For this, his primary rival is Mihawk, but in the recent chapters, even the Gorosei are giving Zoro a run for his money. If Zoro is fated to die, it is unlikely that he will pass away before fulfilling his dream.
Thus, Zoro’s final battle might be the one in which he proves he is worthy of being the most powerful swordsman. However, whether his last battle will be with Mihawk or any other character is yet to be known.
There is a possibility that Zoro might defeat his ultimate enemy but dies in the aftermath due to his injuries. This will achieve two birds with one stone: Zoro will be acknowledged as the greatest swordsman, and it will add more sentimental value to his death. In fact, just like Ace’s death served as a boost for Luffy, Zoro’s might serve the same purpose.
