Since taking over the reins of the IP from their father Albert R. Broccoli in ’95, half-siblings Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli have been responsible for some of the best entries in the franchise. From sticking with Daniel Craig as 007, despite the initial backlash, to reforming the franchise’s female characters, they have been successful in translating Ian Fleming’s work into the modern day.

While the search for the next James Bond is yet to end, for their work on the IP over the past three decades, the Bond Producers are now set to be honored with the Honorary Oscars.

Although some aspects of Ian Fleming’s novels haven’t aged quite well, as they were the product of their time, Broccoli and Wilson have done an impeccable job adapting the material for modern viewers. From finding the best James Bond in Daniel Craig since Sir Sean Connery to delivering the highest-grossing entries in the series, their track record as Bond producers has been impeccable.

Moreover, instead of catering to the small screen and diluting the franchise by making spin-offs for various other characters, the duo has always prioritized the big-screen experience. Following their contribution to the theatrical landscape, the duo are now set to be honored with the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award at this year’s Governors Awards.

Academy President Janet Yang said (via Variety):

The selection of Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli is a testament to their success as producers of the fan-favorite Bond series and their contribution to the industry’s theatrical landscape

Moving forward, it doesn’t seem the duo has any plans to shift their approach as Barbara Broccoli previously told THR that they’re still very much committed to delivering big-screen experiences.

With the duo receiving the prestigious honor for their work on the Bond IP over the past three decades, fans are excited to see what they’ve stored for the next chapter in the franchise. Although nothing is certain as of now, rumors have it that fan-favorite Henry Cavill is off the race following his age.

Cavill, who previously auditioned for the role alongside Craig but fell inches short of nabbing the part, recently shared he too has no ideas, when asked about Bond casting updates (via The Rich Eisen Show). Like everyone else, he has only heard the rumors and stressed that he might be too old for the part.

I have no idea. All I have to go off of is the rumors. I have the same information you have. Maybe I’m too old now or maybe I’m not. We’ll see what the [producers’] plans are

The Man of Steel star is referring to the Bond producers’ want to focus on a young James Bond, which explains why Aaron Taylor-Johnson is one of the favorites right now.
