There are only some shows and films Netflix can master when it comes to the animation medium, lesser even that manage to impress Game of Thrones creator George R. R. Martin. For someone who has already written a series worth of stories upon stories to be told, it would take an earth-shattering tale to impress him. The series may have its ups and downs but the books, although incomplete still, brought to life an incredible story.

Wars, character growth, and world-building are elements Martin understands all too well. So the Netflix animated series that managed to make his gears turn again and again might be surprising to some, but not to most. Blue Eye Samurai, the moment it was released, dominated the hearts of the fans whether they were fans of animated media or not, the A Song of Ice and Fire author was no exception to this either.

Blue Eye Samurai Won Over George R. R. Martin

George R. R. Martin is always on the lookout for the best works. Be it an animated series or a live-action movie, if it manages to catch his eye, there must certainly be a reason for it. Writing on his blog, A Song of Ice and Fire author talked about how there were certain animated films and series that mesmerized him unlike any other. I hardly know where to start on this one. Once we started watching it, we could not stop. Binged the whole thing in three nights, and I am already hungry for the second season.

Blue Eye Samurai only has one season out and that is a problem not just for fans but for Martin as well. The moment he started watching the show, he was hooked. He admitted that as he came across the series, it was a rabbit hole that he couldn’t escape. The Game of Thrones creator was yearning for more one episode after another.

He had endless praise for the series, admiring the animation, the storytelling, the emotional rollercoaster, and so much more. Martin’s admiration for the series also led him to recommend it to other fans with another big demand, release the second season faster.

Blue Eye Samurai Reminded George R. R. Martin of Game of Thrones

George R. R. Martin is eagerly awaiting the second season of the series. Although there is no pressure from his side, there is most certainly anticipation. That is not to say that there is a rush to release the second season. The reason why the first season was so good was because of the heart, care, and understanding put into every single aspect of it. Martin believed that fans of his own work would most definitely find themselves inclined to watch Blue Eye Samurai.

It reminded me of some books I read… what was the title of that series, now? Something about a song… Ah, never mind… Blue Eye Samurai is very much its own thing, and it is magnificent. Even if you don’t normally watch animation, give it a try. It’s terrific. If you like my own stuff, I think you’ll love it.

He compared the series to A Song of Ice and Fire, although he thought of it to be digressing from what made the animated series so special. He acknowledged its uniqueness while also demanding for a second season to come sooner.

While recommending it to others, there is something about Blue Eye Samurai that makes it so different from other animated shows. It feels like a story unlike any other visually presented in an animated format. One that suits it well instead of taking elements away from it.

Blue Eye Samurai is available to watch on Netflix.
