Timothée Chalamet’s career has popped off exponentially in the past few years as he has now cemented himself as one of the most bankable young actors in the business. A few months back, the actor even broke John Travolta’s nearly 50-year-old record of headlining two highest-grossing films within the span of eight months, thanks to the success of Dune 2 and Wonka.

With the former set to receive a threequel, WB is not losing its biggest star anytime soon, as per reports, the studio might be ready to get the ball rolling on a Wonka sequel.

After the release of 2005’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, starring Johnny Depp, WB put the IP on ice until 2023, when Paul King took over its reins to tell an original story. Set 25 years prior to the events of 1971’s Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, upon its release, Wonka became a box-office hit and stole the Christmas crown by grossing over $632M worldwide.

While there have been no official reports on the state of a potential sequel, according to Deadline, an untitled WB family sequel is slated to release on December 17, 2027. This has led many to speculate that this might be the continuation of Wonka, which makes sense following the critical and commercial success of the film.

Although some fans might be concerned about a sequel, as Wonka perfectly wraps itself up without leaving any loose threads, the actor and director have showcased interest in continuing this story.

Even though the Paddington director shaped the prequel to be a full experience without hinging on the possibility of a sequel, Paul King isn’t against the idea. Considering the story takes place 25 years before the events of the original film, there are more stories to be told in between.

I would definitely like to do more. And I’d like to spend more time in this world

Timothée Chalamet too showcased an interest in returning to the whimsical city, as according to him, there is definitely a story to be told about how Wonka ends up like he is in the original film.

He told Entertainment Tonight:

Something twisted happens. I don’t know how we started like this and end there – I don’t know what the story is.

While one should wait until something official comes from WB, considering Chalamet has signed a multi-year deal with them, it’s reasonable to assume they would want him to continue leading major blockbusters.

Wonka is available to stream on Max.
