Elden Ring mesmerised fans and critics upon its release two years ago, and the highly-awaited DLC for the game, Shadow of the Erdtree, has done something similar. Although the expansion is not here yet and will launch tomorrow, June 21, the reviews are now out, and they are all filled with praise.
FromSoftware’s expansion is said to have added more value to the already amazing game, and fans can’t wait to get their hands on it. The expansion is in fact so good that it has beaten all the Soulsborne games in Metacritic rating except one, and it is not either Bloodborne or Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.
Elden Ring DLC Surpasses All Soulsborne Metacritic Scores
Elden Ring DLC brings a brand-new land called the Land of Shadow for players to explore, filled with new bosses and enemies. The reviews for the expansion came a couple of days ago, and players are appreciating the work developers FromSoftware and Hidetaka Miyazaki have done on it.
Players have praised the DLC for its amazing dungeon design, deep and thrilling combat, and exciting lore and characters, among other things. FandomWire’s Tanay Sharma gave the expansion 10/10 in his review, calling it “another work of art that builds on the studio’s history of delivering polished gameplay.”
It seems like the majority of the players think that the DLC has surpassed all Soulsborne installments’ Metacritic ratings, except one. The DLC currently has a Metascore of 95 with 58 critic reviews, and the only title ahead of it is the base game, Elden Ring, which has a Metascore of 96.
Although some players found the expansion very difficult to the point that they weren’t interested in playing anymore, a large number of players seem to be enjoying it. Moreover, the DLC beating Bloodborne and Sekiro, which have a Metascore of 92 and 90, respectively, should be proof of the amazing expansion FromSoftware has given fans.
Despite Strong Competition, Only The Base Game Remains Unbeaten
The game won several Game of the Year awards alongside other awards for Best Design and Best Visual Arts. It is the only Soulsborne title that is unbeaten by its DLC, with a Metascore of 96. The DLC has already beaten the score of The Witcher 3‘s Blood and Wine expansion, which was on top for years.
The expansion has soared past 2009’s Demon’s Souls, Dark Souls, and Dark Souls 2 and its three expansions, as well as Dark Souls 3 and its expansions. Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls and its DLC all have a score of 89, whereas Dark Souls 2 has a metascore of 91.
It also left Bloodborne‘s The Old Hunters, which has a Metascore of 87, and while some can argue that it is rated low or deserves more, it is only a testament that the Elden Ring DLC excels at everything, and any Soulsborne title or DLC needs to do much better to surpass this feat.
