Actor Timothée Chalamet is a critical darling, with many of his films receiving overwhelmingly positive reviews alongside commercial success. He was also nominated for a Best Actor Academy Award for his work in 2017’s Call Me by Your Name. However, despite a glowing career of critical acclaim, one film in Chalamet’s filmography remains a catastrophic failure.
In 2015, Chalamet starred in the star-studded Holiday comedy film Love the Coopers. However, despite featuring the likes of Olivia Wilde and Diane Keaton, the film could not be saved from being a critical mistake in Chalamet’s career, becoming his lowest-rated film. Here is why Love the Coopers failed despite boasting one of the best ensemble casts for a comedy film.
Love the Coopers Remains Timothée Chalamet’s Lowest Rated Film on Rotten Tomatoes
Timothée Chalamet‘s career has soared recently with the actor receiving critical acclaim for his collaborations with director Greta Gerwig, appearing in Lady Bird and Little Women. Both films remain some of the best-received movies from Chalamet’s filmography.
The Academy Award-nominated actor tasted critical and commercial success with Dune, its sequel, and Wonka. However, Chalamet’s 2016 Holiday comedy film Love the Coopers remains his lowest-rated film on Rotten Tomatoes.
According to the review aggregator website, the film has a Tomatometer rating of 18% and an audience rating of 37%, proving it rotten. Directed by Jessie Nelson, the film revolves around a dysfunctional family’s Christmas celebration and the ensuing internal conflicts.
In the film, Chalamet plays the role of Charlie Cooper and appears in a supporting capacity. Upon its release, the film was panned by critics and received mostly negative reviews. While the cast’s performance was appreciated, the screenplay was the major source of criticism. Nonetheless, the film salvaged itself to a certain degree by collecting $42.4 million globally.
Love the Coopers‘ Critical Failure Makes it One of the Worst Holiday Movies Ever
The critical failure of Love the Coopers was surprising, particularly because of its star-studded cast which includes actors capable of elevating the most mundane comedic moments. The film stars Academy Award-winner Diane Keaton, and Golden Globe Award-winner John Goodman as the Cooper family matriarch and patriarch.
The rest of the cast is filled with talented actors such as Alan Arkin, Ed Helms, Marisa Tomei, Olivia Wilde, Anthony Mackie, Amanda Seyfried, and Timothée Chalamet. However, none of the actors are impressive enough in their roles to generate an emotional connection with their characters, which is necessary for the success of a Holiday film.
At the same time, the film fails to carve a distinct identity for itself from other similarly themed films. The Royal Tenenbaums, Everybody’s Fine, and This Christmas pulled off the dysfunctional family trope much better. As a result, despite its stellar cast Love the Coopers has become one of the lowest-rate Holiday films of all time. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film ranks eleventh on the list of worst Christmas movies ever.
Love the Coopers (also known as Christmas with the Coopers in some regions) is streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
