Timothée Chalamet has become a major A-list star with back to back-to-back successes in the past few months with Wonka and Dune: Part Two becoming major box office hits for Warner Bros. In addition to these big tentpole studio blockbusters, Chalamet has shown his incredible range as an actor with projects like Call Me By Your Name, A Beautiful Boy, and Bones and All.
Outside of films, he has also ventured into the world of television and advertising, most popularly having played the character Finn Walden in the hit series Homeland. His 2021 Superbowl ad with Winona Ryder became a sensation with the actor paying homage to one of Johnny Depp’s most iconic roles.
Timothée Chalamet’s Superbowl Ad Was the Perfect Sequel to Edward Scissorhands
Timothée Chalamet surprised everyone with a special Superbowl ad in 2021 with Winona Ryder. The Cadillac ad, featuring Lyriq’s hands-free driving technology, showed Chalamet playing the son of Johnny Depp‘s character Edward Scissorhands named Edgar from the beloved 1990 film by Tim Burton. Ryder reprised her role as Kim, who’s trying to make life easier for her son who has inherited his father’s iconic scissor hands.
In the original film, Depp’s humanoid character charmed audiences with his performance as the titular character, who discovers life and love throughout the film’s proceedings. Similarly in Chalamet’s ad, the actor impressively carries on Depp’s nuances and mannerisms of the character, facing difficulty riding the bus and catching a football (via YouTube).
Audiences were bowled over by Chalamet’s portrayal of Edward Scissorhands’ son and favorably compared it to Depp’s performance in the original film. One user, @emilym3585, expressed their happiness that Edward and Kim had a son, writing “The fact that this implies that Edward and Kim got married and had a son together is everything.” Ryder reprising her role and being the voiceover was also a highlight of the ad.
Another user, @alexander1499, was very happy that they got a short but satisfying sequel to the film writing, “This is the closest thing we’re getting to a sequel and I’m here for it”. Chalamet indeed did a great job playing Edgar and Depp must have been proud of Chalamet carrying on his legacy in the ad.
Timothée Chalamet Was Excited to Get Into The Shoes of Edgar Scissorhands
Timothée Chalamet played Edgar Scissorhands, the son of Johnny Depp’s Edward Scissorhands, in the 2021 Superbowl Cadillac ad. The ad was the most popular one that year and was loved by audiences who felt nostalgic watching Chalamet’s endearing performance. In an interview with Vogue, the actor revealed how he got involved with the ad and paid homage to Depp through it.
Chalamet stated that he wanted to introduce the world of 1990’s Edward Scissorhands to the modern audience with the ad, without sacrificing its originality. He grew up a big Tim Burton fan and was extremely excited to do the ad as Edward’s son. He said,
“I grew up an enormous Tim Burton fan. This was a wonderful opportunity to hopefully make the original material relatable to a modern audience without sacrificing the originality of the 1990 version. Instead, we wanted to create a character that didn’t make you blink in terms of a present-day setting but was a total homage to the character Johnny Depp created.”
Chalamet delivered a big hit this year with Dune: Part Two. He is currently shooting for the biographical drama A Complete Unknown, where he will play Bob Dylan. The film will chronicle a controversial phase of his life where he switched from folk music to rock and roll (via Entertainment Tonight). The film will be directed by James Mangold and will also star Elle Fanning, Monica Barbaro, and Edward Norton.
