The spinoff series is based on the Fire & Blood novel which served as the written record of the events that transpired during the bloody Dance of the Dragons, or the civil war within the House Targaryen.

George R.R. Martin Wants To See More Colorful Dragons In House Of The Dragon

In a press event attended by House of the Dragon showrunners Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik (who later departed from the series), they revealed via Business Insider that George R.R. Martin hopes to see three things in the show: King Jaehaerys Targaryen II, bright heraldry, and colorful dragons.

David [Benioff] and Dan [Weiss] skipped over Jaehaerys for reasons of clarity that [George R.R. Martin] really didn’t understand. He had a bee in his bonnet about it. He wanted us to right that wrong.

The author also wanted the symbolic colors of all the houses in Westeros to stand out. Perhaps the creators would want to include more significant details on their banners and insignias.

It’s such a time of high decadence and peace and wealth and prosperity for the realm. Everybody would really festoon themselves in their house colors and be proud of them as they marched into the tournament.

The dragons are definitely the center of attention in the show. Martin wanted them to take on the spotlight and be recognized for their own unique color, size, and personality.

In their interview with Empire magazine, Sapochnik said, “Each new dragon has its own personality.” He said that this is the last part of the animation design process – “applying personal character traits to each of the dragons.”

Meanwhile, Condal told The Hollywood Reporter that “the biggest difference about this series is the fact that dragons exist in this [era].” In the original show, they were extinct species that only came back to life.

Hopefully, all of these requests by the author will be fulfilled over the next episodes and seasons of House of the Dragon.

Fans Are Anticipating More Dragon Scenes

The showrunners previously shared that they projected 17 dragons to appear throughout the series and some of them have already flown in the first season. Fans are equally excited about seeing these colorful beasts in Season 2 and onwards. Check out these tweets below:

House of the Dragon was previously lauded for its humanization of the characters as well as the portrayal of its villains in a different light. The audience will be expecting more from the Targaryen dragons as well as Martin’s other wishes to be fulfilled by the showrunners and directors.

House of the Dragon is available to watch on HBO.
