It’s not just the weapons you get after grinding for hours and hours, either. One Helldiver has put up an appreciative post for a solid gun that’s included as part of your starting gear. It may not be the flashiest thing, but if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it.

With all the tools at your disposal in Helldivers 2, it’s easy to forget some of the OGs that got us to where we are. One user has decided to bring the spotlight back to a real one, the starter machine gun that got many players through difficult times.

The starter machine gun is quite flexible and almost always a good choice, according to user Samuraistalin. It’s especially helpful as an on-the-go weapon or when you’ve got to hunker down and stand your ground by crouching and going prone.

What brought on the whole post was a recent incident where the OP switched his weapons with a friend who just started Helldivers 2 to give him a taste of high-level gear. OP ended up using the base machine gun and rediscovered their love for it.

The gun’s recoil isn’t too bad, and if you know what you’re doing and are positioned properly, it’s an absolute beast to use. For context, the base machine gun is capable of firing at 630 rounds per minute, 760rpm, and 900rpm. It has a capacity of 150 and carries 2 magazines worth of ammo at once.

OP ends the post with a reminder that starting gear isn’t inferior but well-rounded, compared to some upper-level weapons.

As great as some of the newer weapons are, the starter weapons are where it's at.

For some Helldivers 2 players, the machine gun has come in handy for mowing down groups of nasty Terminids, coming in really handy for the latest Major Order.

They explain how there’s enough ammo to not make you feel like you’ve wasted it on tiny bugs, and the supply packs give you that much more freedom to go to town on the bugs.

While it’s not the most optimal weapon, it is a lot of fun. Ultimately, that’s what matters at the end of the day; you can charge through missions with ‘the best’ weapons, but what’s the point if you’re mentally clocked out from boredom the whole time?
