It isn’t every day that you hear the lead star of a vastly popular fan-favorite series is being replaced due to filming schedule issues, Usually, the star and the studio figure out a plan to accommodate everyone’s schedules. However, that is not what happened with Henry Cavill and the Netflix series, The Witcher.
Cavill who portrayed the role of Geralt of Rivia in the series for 3 seasons had to leave the role due to his commitments to DCU.(the deal which never came to fruition either)
Netflix announces season 5 will be the final season of The Witcher
Henry Cavill is one of the most loved actors in the world. The English actor first rose to fame back in 2007 for his portrayal of Charles Brandon in the series, The Tudors. Cavill gained further prominence and media attention for his portrayal of Superman in DCEU’s Man of Steel back in 2013. However, it was his role as Superman allegedly that cost him another project that was very special to both the actor and his fans.
After portraying the role of Geralt of Rivia for 3 seasons in The Witcher, Henry Cavill took to his Instagram back in October 2022 to announce his departure from the series and also passed on the torch to Liam Hemsworth, who will be taking up the role in Season 4. In a heartfelt Instagram post, Cavill wrote,
“My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for season four. In my stead, the fantastic Mr. Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf.“
With everyone looking forward to season 4 of the series, Netflix announced a piece of even more shocking news recently that season 5 will be the final season of the series. The official page of The Witcher took to X and announced the heartbreaking news by writing,
“It’s official, The Witcher season 4 is in production. But that’s not all, we’re already planning season 5, which will be the final season and bring this epic show to a fitting conclusion. See you on The Continent.”
According to Netflix, season 4 and season 5 of The Witcher are all set to be filmed back-to-back.
Fans back Henry Cavill after Netflix announced the final season of The Witcher
The Witcher has been based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s novels of the same name. Although the series never stayed that close to the source material, there are still a lot of stories left to be covered in the series as Baptism of Fire, The Tower of the Swallow, and Lady of the Lake are yet to be covered in remaining 2 seasons of The Witcher. Everyone can’t help but wonder how the hell Netflix is gonna cover these 3 novels in 2 seasons.
After Netflix announced that The Witcher will be ending after season 5, fans of Henry Cavill took to X(formerly Twitter) and pointed out how they should’ve kept the English actor in the lead.

Damn shame the team ruined a good thing. Cavell as the Witcher is 80% of the show, really what's left if he's not there….

I don't know anyone that wants this show without Henry Cavill

No Cavill means no watch. Show will be cancelled with the viewership tanking. Round of applause to you all who ruined a good thing.

Although a lot of story is left to cover in these 2 seasons, season 5 being the final season of The Witcher did not come as that much of a surprise as the show has been struggling with ratings even when Cavill was the lead star of the show.
All 3 seasons of The Witcher are currently streaming on Netflix.
