Henry Cavill began his tenure as Superman with 2013’s Man of Steel. It was the first part in WB’s DCEU and Cavill reprised the role in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, Justice League, and Zack Snyder’s Justice League, but never got his much-awaited solo sequel. The actor was not out of the franchise yet, but the studio itself was dealing with mismanagement issues.

However, the actor made a surprise appearance in the post-credits scene for the Dwayne Johnson starrer Black Adam. His appearance teased an eventual face-off with the anti-hero and Cavill announced soon after that he was back as Superman in an Instagram post prompting excitement from fans to see him back on the cape.

But, the excitement did not last long as DC Studios revamped their plans and appointed James Gunn and Peter Safran as the new chiefs. The duo reportedly decided to give the franchise a soft reboot, beginning with Gunn’s own Superman (formerly Superman: Legacy). Henry Cavill announced that he would after all not be returning after having a meeting with the duo.

“It’s sad news, everyone. I will, after all, not be returning as Superman. After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life. I respect that James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes.”

Cavill mentioned that he would always be close to the character. After departing from his other regular role as Geralt in The Witcher, the actor has been featured in Argylle, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, and will be working on Highlander and Warhammer 40,000.

The premiere of Henry Cavill’s latest film The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare was eventful for many reasons. For one, it brought back director Guy Ritchie and Cavill back together after nine years. They had previously collaborated on a remake of the spy thriller The Man From U.N.C.L.E., which had bombed at the box office.

Cavill also announced that he was going to be a father and that he was expecting a baby with his girlfriend and VP of Vertigo Entertainment, Natalie Viscuso (via Access Hollywood). However, the Superman star’s dig at his former role as the Kryptonian superhero was the biggest highlight.

While talking about his collaborations with Guy Ritchie, the actor reportedly mentioned that he had also been a part of the director’s historical epic King Arthur: The Legend of the Sword, which starred Charlie Hunnam. Cavill mentioned that he was part of a post-credits scene in the film (via Insider) and said,

The actor took a dig at his post-credits scene in Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam, which as mentioned before, led to nothing. King Arthur was also a box office disappointment, as it earned a meager $148 million against a $175 million budget (via THR).
