Quentin Tarantino is arguably one of the best auteur directors who brings a distinct style to his films that is enjoyed by fans. With great films like Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill, Django Unchained, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, the filmmaker has always maintained his integrity as a director who goes for original material.
Tarantino has never done a big-budget studio film or dealt with an existing IP. He has talked about how these types of films are taking up most of the theatrical markets while original films are struggling to find audiences. In 2022, the filmmaker bashed the current era of Hollywood deeming it as the worst one since the 50s and 80s.
Quentin Tarantino Believes Hollywood Is Going Through Its Worst Era And Fans Couldn’t Agree More
Since the 2010s, Hollywood has changed dramatically from its previous decades in terms of the number of IP and big-budget tentpole films that are made compared to original films. For better or worse, franchises and superhero films have taken over the market and many auteur filmmakers have spoken against this in recent years.
Quentin Tarantino has been making films since the 90s and he has also seen this declining headspace of studios focusing more on franchises over original films (via Deadline). The filmmaker has spoken at length about the ‘Marvelization‘ of films and the commercialization of the art form. In 2022, Tarantino made a bold claim about the state of the industry today, deeming it the worst era since the 50s and 80s. He told on the Video Archives Podcast,
Even though the ‘80s was the time that I probably saw more movies in my life than ever – at least as far as going out to the movies was concerned – I do feel that ‘80s cinema is, along with the ‘50s, the worst era in Hollywood history. Matched only by now, matched only by the current era!
Fans agreed with Tarantino’s sentiments and pointed out how the over-dominance of superhero films and ‘woke’ projects have ruined the industry. Many have pointed out that the majority of the films made today feel joyless and have nothing new to offer. Here are some of the reactions on X,
He's absolutely right, we're in the trenches.

I definitely agree with him, too many movies have dealing with the current social issues like Woke, pronouns and diversity, which also put in identity politics. movies supposed to be about entertainment people and good stories to get away from the current events they are going on

I concur. Too many comic book superhero movies, so boring. 🥱

Tarantino’s comments seem to have seeped into people’s minds today as they have started rejecting inferior studio films and ones that are derivative. People want to see original concepts even with big-budget films and wouldn’t’ necessarily turn up for a known IP. Oppenheimer and Barbie have proven last year that the hunger for great original material is real with audiences.
Sony Head Teases Quentin Tarantino’s Last Film Following The Movie Critic Being Scrapped
Quentin Tarantino was planning The Movie Critic as his final film with many of the actors he’s worked with, returning to star in the film. However, he scrapped the whole project and is starting from scratch. There has been no information about what he is now planning for his 10th film but Sony CEO Tom Rothman is very confident that Tarantino’s final film will be a special one.
Rothman praised Tarantino as a true artist and has immense respect for him. The director wants his final film to be meaningful and the Sony head understands why he had to scrap The Movie Critic. Rothman is very optimistic that Tarantino will make his last film with his studio. He told Deadline,
I would just say this. I have unbounded respect for Quentin, and he is a true artist, and his art is more important to him than anything else. he’s an absolute fountain of creativity, but he wants his last movie to be meaningful to him. And what are you going to say really to that? I am greatly consoled by the absolute certainty that whatever movie he does decide to make as his last movie will in fact be even better. I’m very optimistic about that.
Sony and Tarantino last collaborated on the 2019 hit Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Tarantino wants to go out with a bang and does not want to offer audiences something subpar and disappoint them. It remains to be seen what he cooks up next for his swansong feature as more information about it gets revealed in the future.
