All the games that have been directed by none other than Hidetaka Miyazaki over the years have seen an ever-growing combat system, something which has become a partial brand mark for the director and his studio. From the first-ever Dark Souls game to Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, there has been an insane improvement in how the combat system plays out in the game, and fans absolutely love it.
However, nothing would ever come close to the perfection of a combat system that Elden Ring has managed to achieve. Taking and learning from many elements from past games, the title offers a large variety and customization to the arsenal available to the players. One such mechanic in place is the Ashes of Wars, which the director has revealed more about in his interview with Xbox Japan.
Hidetaka Miyazaki Reveals The True Intention Behind Adding The Ashes Of War Mechanic To Weapons In Elden Ring
For added context, Ashes of War are obtainable customizations available in the game which allows players to give different weapon arts to their preferred weapon. This is something that had never been possible before in any of the Soulslike games released before Elden Ring.
When asked about why it was implemented, Hidetaka Miyazaki stated-
“This work emphasizes freedom in various aspects, and war ash is part of it. I thought about increasing the degree of freedom in the context of strengthening weapons and customizing them in my own way, I think the customization of weapons has greatly increased and it has become fun.”
Miyazaki essentially revealed how he wished to give the players of the game more freedom as to what precisely they can do with their weapons and items provided in the game. Ashes of War have been without a doubt a fun addition to the title, and will surely once again play a significant role when it comes to talking about arsenals in the coming Shadow of the Erdtree DLC.
Director Of Soulslike Games Reveals Why Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree DLC Will Be Superior To All The Past DLCs.
Due to Ashes of War being unique to the latest FromSoftware release, as well as to its Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, there is no doubt that the coming extension will be superior in quality to anything we have seen in the past. This is something intentional as Miyazaki has revealed further in the same interview-
“From the battle techniques to increase the personality of the weapon category at the time of “DARK SOULS 3″, It is strengthening the nuances such as the power to fight in high fantasy or mythological world, As a result, the number of flashy and unique things is increasing.”
The director disclosed how he wished to increase the personality of the arsenal available to players since the time of Dark Souls 3, prompting him to implement more unique mechanics and elements in his coming games at the time.
However, it is not only new weapon mechanics that Elden Ring brought with itself, as the game arrived with many mysteries and gaps left in the storyline for the players to solve. This has prompted fans to often come up with theories that might explain some of the open endings that are left in the game purposefully.
Shadow of the Erdtree DLC is available to pre-order on Steam.
