The map of Elden Ring, also called The Lands Between hosts a lot of mysteries as well as a rich history of a few thousand years. The map has seen the intervention of many outer gods, with only the Greater Will being able to dominate all the others in the end.

However, a few users on social media platforms have figured out how there might have been widespread domination of Scarlet Rot on The Lands Between before the events of the game. The theory also branches out into how the Scarlet Rot outer god actually got sealed into the Lake of Rot, as pointed out by user u/Modfull_x on Reddit.

The Reality Of The Fight Between The Blind Swordsman And The Scarlet Rot In Elden Ring

The aforementioned user has speculated how it is possible the blue fairy of the Siophra River did not in reality give the Blind Swordsman a flowing sword. Instead, the blue fairy instructed the swordsman to use the Ansel River itself as a sword in order to take on and defeat the god of Scarlet Rot.

The swordsman would then go on to drown the Scarlet Rot in the Ainsle River Basin after breaking its dam, which would later become the infamous Lake of Rot every single player of Elden Ring player hates. It is possible that the flowing sword was made afterwards this particular event to mark the achievement, but the story got mixed up with retelling over the years and as it was passed down in generations.

An extension of this theory is how the Scarlet Rot was a widespread phenomenon in The Lands Between, but was washed away by a great flood taking away the dominance of another outer god even before the Greater Will came to be.

The above would also explain the positioning of the Lake of Rot just beneath the Liurnia of the Lakes. The director of the game, Hidetaka Miyazaki has also revealed how the poisoned swamp, just like the Lake of Rot, is his favorite region in every Soulslike game, and how he plans to add them again in the future.

As stated before, the director of the game has drawn a liking for poisoned swamps after he created Elden Ring. He has also revealed how he plans to add a new swamp once again in the coming Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, which is scheduled to be released on 21st June 2024.

Fans also believe that the new poisoned swamp might have already been teased in the recent gameplay trailer of the DLC. A short clipping from the trailer allows us to observe what seems to be a poisoned swamp rumored to give the player a status effect build-up of Deathblight.

We also know how we will get to see this swamp in the new map specifically designed for the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, called the Land of Shadow. The player will be traversing to and from this new area by interacting with Miquella in his cocoon found in the Mohgwyn palace.

Elden Ring is available to purchase on Steam.
