When playing Shadow of the Erdtree, there are many comparisons to be made with fantastical worlds created by creative geniuses throughout their time and careers in history. Given how G.R.R. Martin co-wrote the game, players can expect a lot fantasy elements that feel familiar.

However, another fantasy fiction writer can now be considered a source of inspiration. J.R.R. Tolkien’s surprising influence on the world isn’t hidden anymore, as one of the armor sets in the game feels strikingly similar to one of the biggest villains in literature and fantasy fiction history.

Found in Bonny Village within the Shadow Realm, players can find this armor set. At first glance, it looks like the armor set resembles a famous villain from cinema/literary history. The armor’s design makes it appear like Sauron from the Lord of the Rings films.

YouTuber Gamer Guru has detailed out the exact location of the armor set, and how players can acquire it. This set includes the Armor of Night, Gauntlets of Night, Greaves of Night, and Helm of Night along with the Shield of Night. The set has quite decent stats and should protect you from most kinds of damage types in the game.

However, it’s the aesthetic appeal that lies in the importance of this armor set. In the books as well as the movies, Sauron’s presence is a powerful and evil entity who holds an immense capacity to practice unspeakable power. In the game, the Sauron-esque armor might just give players the willpower to carry out some unspeakable actions against all those who stand against the Tarnished.

It also makes you wonder if the Elden Ring was actually something inspired by the wrath of Sauron from Lord of the Rings.

Shadow of the Erdtree Is Filled With References of All Kinds

The game has endless references to multiple franchises.

Elden Ring isn’t new to making endless references to several franchises, and it looks like Lords of the Rings has now made it to that list. While Shadow of the Erdtree expands on everything the base game had going for it, it’s always welcoming to see new references and lore ideas FromSoftware wishes to experiment with.

While some of the references can tie to the creative process that went into the game, others are purely for aesthetic reasons. For instance, Queen Marika’s family ties and the Elden Ring’s shattering can be G.R.R. Martin’s attempt at recreating nuances found in A Song of Ice and Fire. But, the armor set resembling Sauron may have little to do with any fantastical elements found in The Lord of the Rings.

What are your thoughts on the Night Set? Do you think the armor is an actual reference or purely a coincidence? Let us know in the comments below.
