Bruce Timm made history with the 1992 animated series Batman: The Animated Series which had Kevin Conroy voicing the character. Conroy became synonymous with the character, and none of the other actors who have played Batman have been able to perfectly master the dual personalities of Batman/ Bruce Wayne.

Timm is now back along with James Tucker, (who developed the Batman: The Brave and the Bold series) with a new Batman tale for Amazon titled Batman: Caped Crusader. Hamish Linklater, most popularly known for his role as Father Paul in Netflix’s Midnight Mass, will be voicing The Dark Knight in the show (via Deadline).

On X, fans were excited about the unique casting choice and were aware of Linklater’s range as an actor. With most audiences praising his work on Midnight Mass, DC fans believe that he would do a great job as the character and carry on the legacy of Conroy. Here are some of the reactions,

Linklater’s casting is indeed an interesting one as Timm went for a great character actor, rather than an A-list movie star. The synopsis of the animated show as stated by Deadline feels like a classic Batman story which will also test which personality among Bruce Wayne and Batman defines the individual. It remains to be seen whether Linklater lives up to the hype when the series drops in August.

Bruce Timm is back with another Batman story with Amazon’s Batman: Caped Crusader. Hamish Linklater will voice the titular character in the new DC show. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Timm revealed the decision behind casting Linklater for the role and the unique perspective he brought to the beloved character.

Timm revealed that many actors were great Batmans, but almost no one was able to nail down Bruce Wayne. The revered writer stated that Bruce Wayne is a persona that Batman developed to throw people off his scent. Linklater understood that approach and delivered Timm’s vision of what he wanted Bruce Wayne to be. Timm said,

We had a lot of people who were pretty good Batmans, but almost no good Bruces…[Bruce Wayne is] a persona that Batman himself has cultivated to throw people off of his scent. Deep down inside, he’s not a fun guy. He’s not charming, he’s not sexy, or anything like that. Hamish was really the only one who nailed exactly what we were going for.

In addition to Linklater, other high-profile names will be playing iconic DC characters in the show including Christina Ricci (Catwoman), Jamie Chung (Harley Quinn), Diedrich Bader (Harvey Dent), Minnie Driver, and Mckenna Grace.

Batman: Caped Crusader drops on Amazon Prime on August 1, 2024.
