Naturally, this has led to many in the community wondering why Mortal Kombat still hasn’t introduced a Battle Royale mode/title. However, it looks like NetherRealm Studio’s CEO, Ed Boon, might give Mortal Kombat fans what they’re desperately seeking.

In an interview with IGN, Boon chatted about his love for fighting games and how it allowed him to develop Mortal Kombat 1. When asked if the burnout has finally got to him and if he’s planning to take the popular fighting franchise in a new direction, Boon said that he will definitely wants to try out something different.

I absolutely have desire to do something different. Surprisingly, I don’t feel burnout just because we’ve been trying new stuff with each game.

Boon and his team have been experimenting with Mortal Kombat series for a while now. Over the years, we’ve seen trying out new stuff such as Puzzle Kombat, Konquest, and even game modes such as Invasions in Mortal Kombat 1. With the studio’s open-minded approach and Boon’s keenness to try something different, it’s only a matter of a time before we finally get a bladepoint style battle royale game combined with the iconic Mortal Kombat franchise.

The possibilities are endless when it comes to a Mortal Kombat battle royale game. NetherRealm Studio could integrate the series’ iconic brutal combat with the last-man-standing gameplay. Players could select classic fighters, such as Johnny Cage, and fight against others on an interactive map filled with power-ups, traps, and dangers inspired by the franchise’s deep lore. Heck, instead of guns and blades, we could see the use of pure martial arts to fight it out!

NetherRealm Studios has worked on introducing new game modes and fighting mechanics to keep the franchise fresh. Although we’ve seen tag-team combat in various forms in the past, Mortal Kombat 1 introduces the Kameo mechanic, allowing players to choose a partner for unique synergies.

Over the last couple of months, we’ve seen the developers giving us tons of Kameo fighters, but it seems like things are slowing down.

NetherRealm Studios has revealed disappointing news about the expected release of Ferra into Mortal Kombat 1‘s Kameo list, confirming that the developers need even more time, and it won’t be coming in June. The studio needs a bit more time to make sure that Ferra can help players in the best way possible.

It’s quite disappointing to see that we won’t be able to play with Ferra, but NetherRealm has softened the blow by revealing the release date for Takedaka, the game’s final DLC character. Ferra will now be releasing alongside Takeda on July 23, marking the end of the first planned expansions for Mortal Kombat 1.
