After David Corenswet’s images from the Superman set in Cleveland, Ohio leaked a few days earlier, fans now get a good look at Hawkgirl and Guy Gardner in a new set of photos. Isabela Merced and Nathan Fillion appeared on the set alongside Corenswet and Edi Gathegi in their full superhero gear. Fans were not kind to the actors’ attires as Merced received harsh criticism for the Hawkgirl costume.
Both Fillion and Merced’s costumes were designed similarly to the one worn by Gathegi’s Mister Terrific, featuring a Lord Tech logo. James Gunn responded to the Superman leaked images, sharing that it was fully expected after the outdoors filming.
Isabela Merced’s Costume From David Corenswet’s Superman Receives Harsh Criticism
James Gunn‘s Superman cannot escape the prying eyes of paparazzi cameras. A few days earlier, set photos were leaked from the filming of the movie in Cleveland, Ohio. The leaked images showed several stars of the film including David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Edi Gathegi, and others.
@clevelanddotcom released a new set of photos, this time featuring Isabela Merced‘s Hawkgirl and Nathan Fillion‘s Guy Gardner/Green Lantern. Both the actors donned a comic-accurate version of their costumes, with Merced sporting the helmet from the comics. The costumes also featured the Lord Tech logo, hinting at Sean Gunn’s character Maxwell Lord.
Fans were not happy with the costumes in the leaked images. Merced’s suit received harsh criticism, with many commenting that it looked like the suits from the CW/DC universe. One fan shared that too many cameos and the CW-style suits would ruin James Gunn’s Superman.
Another fan commented that Hawkgirl, Mister Terrific, and Guy Gardner looked like members of the Power Rangers. One fan shared the complaint that Merced’s Hawkgirl looked weird without the comic-accurate red hair. However, one fan went on to explain that these were not their final costumes, but the ones sponsored by Maxwell Lord. Some of the fan reactions read:

Btw everyone, these are LordTech suits and these won’t be the costumes they wear in other projects, they’ll probably get more comic accurate suits by the end, so them having theses suits is intentional.

Fillion, Merced, and Gathegi joined the cast of Superman way back in July 2023. Fans have yet to see Anthony Carrigan, Sara Sampaio, and María Gabriela de Faría in their costumes as Metamorpho, Eve Teschmacher, and The Engineer respectively. Milly Alcock‘s Supergirl is also expected to make a cameo in this film.
James Gunn Addressed The Superman Leaked Images
James Gunn’s Superman tried its best to cover superhero costumes with black hoods and umbrellas. But filming in broad daylight had its own disadvantages. When a fan asked about the leaked set photos, Gunn shared on Threads that it was “fully expected”. However, when asked if any of the photos contained spoilers, Gunn shared (via Threads):
Not even a little. I’d never shoot a big spoiler outside in the middle of the city.
The fan hate that followed proves why leaked images from the sets are problematic for a film. The film also stars Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Pruitt Taylor Vince as Jonathan Kent, Neva Howell as Martha Kent, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Terence Rosemore as Otis, Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, Christopher McDonald as Ron Troupe, and Mikaela Hooever as Cat Grant.
Superman is scheduled to be released in theaters on July 26, 2024.
