The mounting pressure to write the next masterpiece may have got to Martin, as he is clearly struggling with the manuscript. While his iconic novel series remains incomplete, Martin has now teased a TV series or film adaptation of the famous video game Elden Ring.

He helped in the world-building of the games alongside creative director Hidetaka Miyazaki.

George R.R. Martin‘s sixth novel, The Winds of Winter, in A Song of Ice and Fire series, has been delayed several times. Even the HBO show, Game of Thrones, managed to outpace Martin’s slow writing of the book.

According to Martin, the novel is approximately more than 1,500 pages long and he had written almost 1,100 to 1,200 pages (via THR). He had provided a hard estimate on the novel’s release date several times, but the author failed to finish the work on said time.

When Martin came down with COVID-19 in 2022, some fans began speculating about what would happen to the unfinished novel series. This horrified the author a little as he revealed in an interview with Vanity Fair. During the interview, he shared that he had made considerable progress on the novel in the two years of isolation.

However, he revealed that he had given up hope on predicting the end of the novel. He changed his attitude, sharing that the novel will be done when it’s done. He added that he didn’t feel close to dying at all and didn’t want to speculate on the topic. He shared with Vanity Fair:

I’m making progress, but I’ve given up on any hope of predicting the end. Every time I do, I don’t make it and everybody gets mad at me, and there’s no sense. It’ll be done when it’s done.

Hopefully, COVID won’t kill me, so we won’t have that issue. I do find it a little grisly, people speculating online about what’s going to happen to the rest of the books when I die. I don’t like to speculate about that. I don’t feel close to dying.

When a Game of Thrones spinoff was in discussion, the producers initially considered The Long Night storyline. However, it was eventually scrapped since Martin didn’t have the entire material of the show written. The producers didn’t want to repeat the same GoT mistake again.

Rumors have been rampant about a film or series adaptation of the role-playing action game. Martin addressed the rumors in one of his blog posts. While he shared that he had nothing to say about the rumors, it definitely had a hidden meaning in the way he wrote it. Martin shared in his blog:

Oh, and about those rumors you may have heard about a feature film or television series based on Elden Ring… I have nothing to say. Not a word, nope, not a thing, I know nothing, you never heard a peep from me, mum mum mum. What rumor?

Game of Thrones fans may not love the idea of Martin involving in an Elden Ring adaptation without completing his novel series first.

Fans can watch the screen adaptations of Martin’s works, Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, now streaming on Max.
