With fans waiting for the next Warhammer 40k, it should take things up a notch. With that said, combat and movement will be among the things that players will notice when the game arrives this September. They may be in for a treat as one of the greatest Warhammer fan films has a lot to do with the development.

More precisely, the game’s movement is purely inspired by the Astartes project by Syama Pederson. Games Workshop hired him for the sequel after being impressed by the accurate representation of the Space Marines in his animated project as they confront a mysterious force.

That Decision Proved Right For Ultramarines’ Depiction

It’s difficult to present characters with bulky builds when we are talking about Warhammer. They didn’t feel right in the previous game. However, Syama Pederson’s project did everything right with the movement, so it didn’t feel like they were wearing something light. Saber Interactive creative director Oliver Hollis-Leick explained this and said:

It’s a really tricky balancing act because they’ve got to be able to move fast enough for them to be responsive to player input, but they’re also huge and you can’t break the physics of that amount of mass trying to move

He has namechecked Syama’s animation as the best reference point for the game during Gamescon 2023. Players can check out the original animation developed by Pederson here, where a 12-minute-long film shows a Space Marine strike force carrying out a bloody operation.

The upcoming Saber Interactive game draws inspiration for other elements as well. Brad Pitt starrer movie, World War Z, was among them and essentially caused Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 to be greenlit.

Needless to Say, Warhammer 40K Has Advanced a Lot

Space Marine 2 will be coming after over a decade of the first game in the series. Hollis-Leick explained in another interview that the next Warhammer 40K game will be a maturation of the original. They are transitioning away from the comic approach to do justice to the dark and dangerous tone as depicted in the franchise’s universe.

It will also bring some elements previously seen in video games like Left 4 Dead and Gears of War. As the players confront Tyranids in this one, hordes and enemy spawns will be adjusted by the game as per the performance. To this end, PvE mode will be an interesting experience.

The Ultramarines chapter, which will see the return of the titular character Titus, now a lieutenant, includes ranged combat as well as hack and slash. While the former will be effective against weaker enemies, the latter is useful when confronting Tyranid hordes. Needless to say, the game has reached a new level, as depicted in its demo.
