The trailer sees a hand-to-hand combat between Butcher and Black Noir at an office. While fans were excited to see Black Noir returning, they were greeted with an appearance from Gen V’s Asa Germann, who plays Sam Riordan. This sparked a fan theory that Riordan would don the Black Noir suit in the upcoming season.

The third season of the Amazon Prime Video series The Boys explored the perpetually silent superhero of the Seven, Black Noir. One of the oldest members of the Vaught superhero program, Black Noir, was revealed to have been part of team Payback, the World War II superhero team that was headed by Soldier Boy.

The season also gave a rare glimpse into Black Noir’s psyche and his mental state. The silent and lonely character was surrounded by 2D-animated characters, which were hallucinations that helped him cope with his anxiety and unstable mental state. Black Noir was also unfortunately killed by Homelander after the latter gets to know that Noir hid the information that Soldier Boy was his biological father.

Eric Kripke, the showrunner of The Boys, mentioned that though Black Noir was killed in the season, a new replacement would be seen in season 4. The showrunner also mentioned that actor Nathan Mitchell, who played the role since season one, would be returning in a new and hilarious role. Kripke said to EW,

“[Nathan will play] a different character who wears the Black Noir suit. It’s definitely not the last we’ve seen of Black Noir as a hero. It’s just that the guy who was inside [the Noir suit] in season 3, he’s gone. But we have Nathan playing a really interesting and hilarious character who wears the suit next season.”

Kripke also mentioned to EW that he was a bit apprehensive at first as Mitchell had played the masked role of Black Noir, while Fritzy-Klevans Destine played him unmasked in the flashbacks. But he was confident that Mitchell would get to play a much better character.

Fan Theory Puts Gen V’s Sam As The New Black Noir

The fourth season of The Boys will be released on Amazon Prime Video on June 13, and its trailer came out earlier this week. The show saw most of the beloved characters from the show such as Karl Urban’s Billy the Butcher and Antony Starr’s Homelander return, while also introducing some new characters played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Rob Benedict.

The show also saw a few fan-favorite characters from the spinoff series Gen V making an appearance. Asa Germann, who played Sam Riordan and Maddie Philips, who played Cate Dunlap in the show, were seen in a short glimpse. The characters were welcomed by Vaught as superheroes at the end of season one of Gen V.

The presence of Germann in the show has sparked a fan theory that Sam would be the new Black Noir. An X (formerly Twitter) user mentioned that the fight sequence between Billy the Butcher and the new Black Noir seemed to have similarities with Sam’s fighting style.

“My expectations for Sam as Noir have increased, without any doubts he’s him. The fighting style in this scene with him and butcher looks exactly how Sam fights in Gen V! Yeah this is going to be awesome.”

Another YouTube fan shared the same opinion and mentioned that the body language of the new Noir looked similar to Sam’s in Gen V. Sam was also one of the most troubled characters in the show, with his schizophrenia increasing due to being injected with Compound V. Though Nathan Micthell was confirmed to reprise the role, the fan theory that Sam is the new Noir seems to be gaining a lot of traction.
