X-Men ’97 had a stupendous success to the credit of the show. The Disney+ show is the continuation of the X-Men: The Animated Series in the 90s, now only without Professor X. Following the show claiming the astonishing height of accolades from fans and critics, Marvel Boss Kevin Feige reportedly has a big plan for the show.
However, fans have a difference of opinion regarding Feige’s decision. Most fans are in line with not tainting the show with any interference. Of course, X-Men ’97 has been an emotional roller coaster for Marvel fans as they could relive the nostalgia of the original show in the 90s.
Kevin Feige Reportedly Has A Plan For X-Men ’97
X-Men ’97 success propelled Marvel Boss, Kevin Feige to make future plans for the show. Reportedly, the animated superhero adventure show with an astounding 98% Rotten Tomatoes score is being planned for an inclusion in the Marvel Cinematic Universe canon. X-Men ’97 episodes 3 and 5 director, Emi Yonemura had a chat with Inverse revealing Marvel’s plan for the show.
“That has always been something we know was on Kevin Feige’s mind, do we make this part of the MCU? Do we not make this part of the MCU? It’s actually gone back and forth quite a few times, and I think we did land in a smart place because [X-Men: The Animated Series] was its own thing, and I think that to continue it we needed to be our own thing.” she told the outlet.
Is it a necessity to include the show in the MCU canon? Marvel is certainly dwelling on the coin toss right now. However, fans are not very supportive of the idea as the narrative has its own existence without being connected to the grand universe of Marvel.
Fans Are Upset With Marvel’s Plan For X-Men ’97
If we look at the recent movies including Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and The Marvels, the evidence of infusing X-Men as a standalone universe has reflected the fact that Marvel Studios has bigger plans for X-Men in the MCU canon. With that, it is not far to include the recent show in the canon as well. Fans are certainly not pleased with the potential inclusion of X-Men ’97.

Kevin, can you just let X men have its own standalone universe?
So many great characters and story arcs that do not need external involvement

I'd rather they stay separate personally. X-Men 97 is a masterpiece, but the MCU X-Men should be their own team, in my opinion.

X-Men ’97 head director Jake Castorena has also been quite critical of the idea. “We’re getting the X-Men in this format and we’re doing it justice not just by ourselves,” he told Inverse.
“But also other fans as well, and we’re starting to get a resurgence of the X-Men in film again. I love that. And I think it’s great that we can have different things, let them be different. If you try to connect things like that, it may or may not, I dare not say hinder storytelling, but let them do their stories. Let us do our stories and let the rest of the world eat it up, man.”
X-Men ’97 also teased the potential inclusion, showing Captain America’s shield on the ice. Still, for Castorena, it is not too late to keep the show away from the canon.
X-Men ’97 is now streaming on Disney+.
