The DCAU has very rarely disappointed fans. With the perfect balance of fan service, good storytelling, and experimentation, the vastness of DC’s animated universe is truly amazing. Having been going strong, long before live-action adaptations of these works began, these projects have acted as the only source of light in these dark times in the superhero world.
The most recent addition to this universe was Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths—Part One, which is the first in a three-part adaptation of the legendary comic book storyline. When a plot as iconic as Crisis on Infinite Earths is being adapted into any medium, fans are bound to get nervous. However, the animated movie has met all of its expectations and then some.
Recently, the producers of the film gave an interview where they revealed some information that might disappoint some fans.
Not Everything Made It Into The DCAU Movie
Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths—Part One has become quite the talk of the town, having been given immense praise by critics and audiences alike. On top of its exceptional cast of voice actors and excellently planned story, the film also has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which is no small feat.
Considering just how much attention the movie is getting, many fans would be upset to know that part of the original script for the first film was cut out. Recently, Butch Lukic, Jim Krieg, and Jeff Wamester gave an interview with The Beat where they talked about the process of turning the script into animation.
“From the written script we did have to cut out other scenes because unfortunately we are only limited to a certain amount of footage we are allowed to animate.” said Lukic.
Here, Lukie delivered the disappointing news to fans. The producer revealed that the final product of the DCAU movie was not fully accurate with respect to the original script that was drawn up.
The Stories That Were Left Behind
Butch Lukic elaborated on what he meant by this, stating that the final product of Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths—Part One is about 95% accurate to what the script was trying to be. This is not a lot for a movie, especially when they are adapting a pre-existing story. Regardless, Krieg then revealed exactly what was left behind on the writers’ room floors.
” It’s pretty much 95% of the script, but we did have to cut a couple of scenes out.” said Lukic.
The screenwriter joked that if fans wished for a character or an arc to have been a part of the movie, it was probably Lukic who got it removed from the final product. Speaking more seriously, he mentioned that he wanted to feature a story with Amazo, as well as an arc for Barry Allen and Iris.
“So remember, if there are things that you wish were there, I had them in the script and they had to be eliminated by Butch. [Laughs]. When I wrote the outline, I did write the Amazo story and the Iris and Barry story, and then after they were written I shuffled them. I don’t think anyone thinks in that absolute non-linear way.” added Krieg.
However, a movie has a limited amount of time to get its story across, and not every character can make an appearance or get their own time in the sun.
