From the world of Bruce Timm and Paul Dini, Butch Lukic and Jim Krieg were given the task of converting comics into animated movies. However, the filmmakers couldn’t add all the details in their movies, and they have been kind enough to reveal the reason behind it.

Not just the movies, a huge number of DC fans are also inclined towards DCAU (DC Animated Universe). Started by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm, DCAU continued from Batman: The Animated Series in 1992 to Justice League Unlimited in 2006.

In a recent interview with The Beat, filmmakers, including producer Butch Lukic, screenwriter Jim Krieg, and director Jeff Wamester were seen discussing some important stuff related to Justice League: Crisis On Infinite Earths – Part One. The animated film was in work for some time and finally got released in the United States of America on January 9, 2024.

When interviewer Taimur Dar asked the filmmakers about adopting the iconic DC storylines for animation, Butch Lukic was the first to respond. Answering the question, Lukic mentioned how he and Jim were given just 10 movies to produce.

Lukic added that 10 animated movies were insufficient to cover everything and he would have really appreciated it if the number of movies was 20 instead of 10. He said (via The Beat):

“Even with ten movies we had to skip a lot. There’s no way we could have had everything otherwise we’d need twenty movies.”

Krieg also advised that although 20 was the right number of movies to cover everything, it isn’t quite wise to deny getting 10 movies. No matter how, if the situation demands, it’s better to complete the work with whatever has been provided. A little career advice from Krieg it seems. In addition to this, they also discussed how some of the scenes had to be cut out.

Did DCAU’s Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths Really Keep the Humor in Check?

Toward the end of the interview, interviewer Dar asked the filmmakers about how they added just the right amount of humor in the recent movie. Dar asked the question as he personally was pretty tired of the trend where superheroes are seen with quippy humor throughout the entire time.

In response, Director Wamester mentioned that the team made sure that there was a good balance between the amount of humor and the amount of consequences. He clarified that Krieg was asked to bring in a lot of humor which was followed by the equivalent amount of consequences. By doing so, they were ultimately able to bring everything back to being human.

Further, Krieg compared DC animated movies with that of Marvel movies. He said that almost all Marvel characters come out as comedians with excessive humor, but that’s not what they were aiming for. Hence, the rule was strictly followed that a perfect balance would be maintained at any cost.

Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths is available for watching on Crunchyroll and Apple TV.
