Being a double-edged sword, while it gives users the power to call out big names, it can also cause unprecedented levels of damage to one’s reputation if used maliciously. Arrow star Alex Kingston too shared her concern regarding cancel culture’s dangerous repercussions.

Douglas is Cancelled | ITV

Known for playing Dinah Lance in Stephen Amell‘s Arrow, Kingston’s upcoming ITV drama Douglas is Cancelled revolves around a news anchor, who gets canceled for making an off-color joke on air. Reflecting on the show’s theme, Alex Kingston highlighted the issues of canceling someone and how dangerous it can be. She stressed that everything is now seen in black and white and there’s no room for empathy or sympathy anymore.

She told The Telegraph:

Sort of fascistic, really. I don’t think people realise how dangerous cancelling people is, what that has meant historically… There is no empathy or sympathy, opinions are immediate and black and white

However, the Arrow star hopes that things will change for the better moving forward and people can start being more kinder to each other.

I hope we’ll start coming back to a place where people can be kinder to each other, both in thinking about what they’re going to say and hearing what’s being said \

It’s not hard to see where Kingston is coming from, as cancel culture can and has proven to be detrimental for artists, who didn’t deserve it, as in certain cases, it can lack nuance and context.

Guardians of the Galaxy star Karen Gillan, who previously collaborated with Kingston back in Doctor Who stressed that starring in Douglas is Cancelled felt like she was coming home.

She said:

It felt really comforting and familiar. Starting a new job is always terrifying, but it was so nice to have the comfort of thinking, ‘These are people that I love. So they’re not going to let me be terrible in it

Gillan also deemed Kingston her favorite person on set, as the actress expressed “She’s got such a fun vibe on set”. Moreover, the Guardian star’s favorite thing on set is to ask Kingston to tell a story about her life, as according to Gillan, it can often lead to something wonderful.
