Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke discussed the challenges they faced during the development process. He believes that the journey to resurrect this iconic series was challenging enough that no sane person would have followed through.

Navigating Challenges: From Concept to Creation of Baldur’s Gate 3

Swen Vincke revealed in an interview the exhausting challenges his team had to face in bringing Baldur’s Gate 3 to life. One of the most important things was the decision-making process behind taking on such a monumental project. He humorously remarked that “no sane person” would have agreed to develop the game due to how expensive it was.

I don’t think anybody in their sane mind would have made the decisions that we did. This game should not exist, in the sense that it was a very expensive game to make and it’s in a genre that has not proven yet that it can sustain that type of investment. It’s proven now, so I hope there’s going to be a lot more RPGs.

The financial burden of developing a game of this magnitude is unparalleled, particularly in an industry where costs can get out of control. Even for seasoned developers like Larian Studios, the risk was very high as they wanted to bring the pen-and-paper D&D experience into a video game with motion capture performance.

However, the decision to follow through with Baldur’s Gate 3 was not driven solely by the financial gain they could make. Instead, they were more focused on giving justice to the franchise’s rich legacy. Vincke wanted to showcase the narrative power of RPGs but in the form of a AAA game.

I was convinced that if you brought AAA values to the type of game that we were making with [Divinity: Original Sin 2], there was going to be a broad audience for it, even if it is a little bit hard to get into. Or at least people think it’s hard to get into.

The sheer amount of resources required, from manpower to cutting-edge technology, pushed the studio to its limits both creatively and financially. In the end, they were standing tall as the game became an undeniable success.
