Demon Slayer or Kimetsu no Yaiba is the 2019 anime series adapted from the manga written by Koyoharu Gotouge. The series quickly rose top of the charts, becoming extremely popular and successful for a plethora of reasons, which mainly include its gripping storyline and breathtaking visuals. As a result, the show has established itself as one of the best anime to have graced our screens in recent years.
The show is indeed a global success, and it is hard not to love its main characters, featuring Tanjiro Kamado and his sister, Nezuko Kamadao, who turned into a demon in the limelight. Without a doubt, she is a fan favorite as the adorable demon helps his brother in fighting the bad guys. However, Abby Trott, the English voice actor of the character, shares how she believes that the character has a much deeper reason for fighting alongside her brother.
Nezuko’s Voice Actor Shares The Character Has a Weighted Purpose For Fighting Demons
Koyoharu Gotouge might have featured Tanjiro Kamado as the protagonist in his acclaimed series, Demon Slayer, but his younger sister, Nezuko Kamado surpasses her brother in charm. The Demon Girl is featured in a pink kimono, which matches her pastel pink eyes but remains mostly mute due to her bamboo muzzle. Though, that does not hinder her from shining luminously through her actions and adorable antics.
The character was turned into a demon after their family was slaughtered by a demon, but she managed to suppress her killer instincts and joined her brother in defeating the demons. With three seasons deep in the show, fans of the series believed her to be a fearless demon fighting alongside Tanjiro Kamado. However, Abby Trott, the English voice actor, believes otherwise.
The English voice actors of Demon Slayer sat down with BuzzFeed for an exclusive interview, where Abby Trott was asked about her “approach” to refining Nezuko’s voice in each arc of the series. The actor shared how the Demon Girl struggled to maintain “control of her demonic side” in the initial episodes of the series, but she has shown instances of how she will do anything for her family. Trott said,
“We see Nezuko change quite a bit throughout the first few story arcs. While discovering new powers and pushing her abilities to the limit, she also struggles with maintaining control of her demonic side. Throughout the story, however, the common thread is that Nezuko would do anything for her family; we see this when she is taking care of her brothers and sisters as a human, and we see this when she fights by Tanjiro’s side as a demon.”
The voice actor ardently believes that the character is anything but “fearless” because she fears for the safety of her family and peers, and this is the reason she is determined to fight. She said,
“I would argue that Nezuko is not fearless — she fears for her friends and family’s safety. I think this is why she fights. If anything, Nezuko becomes more and more determined and starts to express her opinions a bit more (like her adoration for Mitsuri), and my approach evolves with the character.”
Even though Nezuko Kamado spends the majority of time hidden in that little box on Tanjiro Kamado’s back, she can be a ferocious fighter to protect her brother and friends. Though she has never feasted on humans or received formal combat training, her power potentially rivals that of an Upper-Rank Demon. Moreover, to make things even she has her unique Blood Demon Art, enabling her to ignite herself into pink flames damaging other demons.
Nezuko Voice Actor Opens Up About Her Most Impactful Scene in Demon Slayer
In the same interview with BuzzFeed, Abby Trott was asked about her “most impactful” scene in the entire Kimetsu no Yaiba series, where she answered the first episode of the show always gets “through to her” because of how Tanjiro is attacked by his sister who has turned into a demon and instead of killing her, he pleads her to remember her origins.
She said,
“For me, it has to be Episode 1 when Nezuko first gets turned into a demon. She attacks Tanjiro, and he tries to fend her off with an axe between her fangs, pleading with her to remember who she is. Suddenly, he gets through to her, and she starts to cry. THIS SCENE GETS ME EVERY TIME. It shows how strong their bond truly is and how unique these siblings are.”
There is no denying that Koyoharu Gotouge has added one of the most impactful characters in the show, with Nezuko-chan becoming the most lovable anime girl of all time.
Kimetsu no Yaiba can be streamed on Crunchyroll.
