If you’ve played the Fallout games, it’s likely you’re aware of how American it can feel. Not only with its setting and cultural aspects but also the philosophies honed by its narrative. As it turns out, Todd Howard pretty much aligns his views with this, keeping aside the feelings of Fallout: London developers.

In an interview, Todd made it very clear that the games are supposed to stick to a cultural approach that is familiar to most of its fans. Now that the TV show is out, this is even more evident. Sorry Fallout: London fans, this one’s gonna sting.

Todd Howard Would Like to Keep Fallout American, and That’s It

Todd is pretty clear about the Fallout history (and future).

In an interview conducted by a Kinda Funny Games podcast, Hodd Toward didn’t hold back when he spoke about Fallout’s true nature and why it doesn’t bother the team if devs of the ambitious DLC Fallout: London had any problems with the same.

According to Todd, the cultural aspects of the game pretty much align with everything Bethesda had planned out initially:

My view is part of the Fallout schtick is on the Americana naivete and part of that. And so, for us right now, it’s okay to acknowledge some of those other areas but our plans are to predominately keep it in the US.

Seems like Todd has been quite adamant about his. He also spoke about The Elder Scrolls too saying, “It’s okay to leave mystery or questions, ‘What is happening in Europe, what is happening here’.”

He further added:

In Elder Scrolls everyone wants to go to these specific lands, and I’m known for saying the worst thing you can do to mysterious lands is to remove the mystery.

It’s clear now that the team behind the games knows what it wants to achieve, and there’s no change of plans in its vision.

Should Fans Be Disappointed by This?

There are always going to be different mods that try new things.

A simple answer to this is… how do fans manage their expectations? As it seems, the future of the franchise is pretty vague. There’s close to no serious work done so far on the next entry, and it’s likely that the game will revolve around the American culture (and its history) once again.

Maybe, we’ll even get to take a look into the future of America, as and how Bethesda imagines it to be. If there is to be a departure into other countries and unfamiliar themes, it would be a genuine surprise to most players, both old and new.

Furthermore, games like Watch Dogs: Legion have already proved that London can be a great atmosphere for a franchise otherwise set in different spaces. Why not Fallout?

Do you think this is an injustice to the devs of Fallout: London? How do you feel about the future of the franchise? Let us know in the comments below.
