The CW has spawned a number of DC shows in the past few decades, and The Flash stands among the best of them. Running for nine seasons, the TV show chronicled the journey of the Scarlet Speedster, while also having crossovers and making cameos in other DC shows. However, there were times when The Flash was incredibly close to finishing its run, before it was stretched to 9 seasons.
The Flash was originally supposed to end after Season 8, but thanks to fan support and CW execs, the series was given another chance to conclude its story properly.
The Flash Season 8 finale was rewritten multiple times
The Flash’s 9 season run on CW wasn’t easy at all – the production has had several scares of being canceled at various points in time. However, showrunner Eric Wallace had a definitive conclusion in mind, it was supposed to happen in Season 8.
Wallace was unsure about the series’ renewal for a ninth season and hence wanted to finish the story and not leave the fans on a cliffhanger. Wallace told TVLine:
“We had to rewrite it three different times, because when it was a series finale, we had to have a much more deep conversation with Barry and Iris, dealing with the fact that they were going to have kids soon. It was a little bit sexier, and it was a lot more romantic of a scene. I really liked it.”
The Flash returning for a ninth season definitely delighted the fans, but maybe the series conclusion originally planned for Season 8 would have made them happier. Why you may ask? Because The Flash team bid farewell with a party!
The Flash Season 8 was supposed to end with a big party
Spilling more secrets about the original planned ending, Wallace revealed that a number of scenes had to be rewritten, and a bunch of others were left out. One of them was a big party held by The Flash team where everyone was supposed to say goodbye to each other and the fans.
Wallace said:
“There would have been an additional scene with all of Team Flash all getting their goodbyes on. But when we found out we had another season to play with, that meant, ‘Ooh, I can tease next year’s Big Bad? All right, let’s do that!’ So that final scene changed radically, and then the ‘Goodbye to Team Flash’ group party scene got deleted entirely.”
The party scene was instead replaced with a glowing blue crystal in a mysterious lab from the year 2049, a tease to the main villain of Season 9. The Flash Season 9 premiered on February 8, 2023, and had Barry facing up against the worst of his enemies yet: Red Death, Bloodwork, and Cobalt Blue.
All seasons of The Flash are available for streaming on Netflix.
