Xbox Game Pass was announced to be getting two new games today for its ever-expanding catalog, and it’s the one game that constantly gets compared to the Dead Space franchise and is even called its spiritual successor.
That’s right, The Callisto Protocol has finally arrived at Game Pass. It’s another shot for gamers to see the title for what it is, beyond its Dead Space comparisons.
Xbox Game Pass Adds This Narrative-Driven Third-Person Survival Horror

For many people, their first and only impression of the game might be that it resembles the beloved Dead Space franchise (which got a remake last year), but it’s much more than that.
While the Dead Space comparisons do hold some basis in many aspects of the game, it probably stems from the fact that the creator of the 2008 space franchise is also that of The Callisto Protocol.
You play Jacob Lee, who lands in Black Iron Prison after a twist of fate and unfortunate circumstances. The prison is located on Jupiter’s moon, Callisto, and is a maximum-security penitentiary that’s somewhere in between a rock and a hard place.
According to the new post from the official Game Pass account, the game will be available on Xbox consoles, PC, and Cloud. It was already on the PlayStation Plus lineup starting September 2023.

Let’s be honest, the game wasn’t universally loved, and you’ll find it hard to find someone who would rate it a 10/10. However, not every game is meant to get such a perfect score, and not having one doesn’t mean it’s not worth playing.
What Happened to The Callisto Protocol?

There are a lot of things to say about Striking Distance Studios’ space horror shooter, considering its all-time reviews are ‘Mixed‘ on Steam and its Metacritic score from users sits at seven.
Why exactly are people not that into The Callisto Protocol, though? Well, there are a lot of explanations for it, but this Reddit post is a pretty good summary.

To sum it up, the newer space horror shooter falls just short of Dead Space and fails to comprehend some of the most important reasons why the older game is loved the way it is.
One of the biggest reasons is how the limited and constricted gameplay plays into the horror of it all. You also have a bigger motivation in the older game than just trying to break out of prison. There are more, that’s kind of the gist of it.
Review scores don’t say it all, and since it’s coming to Game Pass, it’s definitely worth giving it a shot and trying it out yourself before passing judgment.
