Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone got fans hooked on the story of the Dutton family, but as the series progressed, there was a noticeable deviation in the plot that many viewers noticed. Take, for instance, Kayce Dutton.

He was introduced in the series as one to watch out for, and he had this promising potential to become the show’s central figure. Over time, his arc seemed to wane to give way to another more interesting albeit insignificant plot: the tumultuous romance between Beth and Rip.
Yellowstone Steered The Spotlight Away From Its Supposed Main Character
A fan from Reddit pointed out how Yellowstone seemed to have given more than enough focus on Kelly Reilly’s Beth Dutton and Cole Hauser’s Rip Wheeler more than the story of Luke Grimes’ Kayce Dutton.

Fans have shown great interest in the duo’s love story, and it seems like director Taylor Sheridan listened to the audience’s clamor for more screen time for the two rather than focus on the real plot.

Television shows thrive because of high ratings. Of course, if the people like what they see, they will continue subscribing to the series. Sheridan wanted to keep his viewers, so he gave them more of Beth and Rip, and less of Kayce.
It also comes back to the series creator’s creative freedom to do what he wants. As an original show, there’s nothing to compare it with, hence Sheridan’s own discretion to appeal to the viewers’ satisfaction by pandering, or assisting in the indulgence or gratification of another person, giving them more of what they crave in exchange for, in this case, sky-high viewership.
Game Of Thrones Ruined Itself By Trying To Please The Fans
Game of Thrones was one of the biggest flagship shows at HBO, but how come a highly popular series ended up becoming the recipient of so much backlash? Like Yellowstone, it also became dependent on fans’ demands.
It’s already a known fact that it changed a lot of things from the original source, but what was more infuriating was that the people behind it tried to add more unnecessary stuff that did not contribute anything to the entire story.
Take the words of Neil Marshall who spoke with Empire (via Vulture) to expose what an executive boss told him while he was directing the episodes Blackwater and The Watchers on the Wall:
This particular exec took me to one side and said, ‘Look, I represent the pervert side of the audience, okay? Everybody else is the serious drama side, [but] I represent the perv side of the audience, and I’m saying I want full frontal n*dity in this scene.’ So you go ahead and do it.
Game of Thrones gave the audience something to enjoy for the moment, but what they did not know was it was going to doom the show in the long run.

Don’t forget the infamous love story of Emilia Clarke’s Daenerys Targaryen and Kit Harington’s Jon Snow which completely ruined everything they have been setting up to do for Daenerys since Season 1.
Yellowstone streams on Paramount Network while Game of Thrones is available to watch on HBO.
