The year 2023 was clearly dominated by Larian Studios’ Baldur’s Gate 3, be it in terms of sales and revenue generated or sweeping through the award ceremonies. The game was applauded by both players and critics alike, while it also managed to claim the 2023 Game of the Year title.
Come 2024, and the game isn’t completely dead yet. Fans continue to obsess over the game. Naturally, a lot of fans expected and were eagerly awaiting more announcements from Larian Studios regarding a possible DLC or a sequel.
However, the hopes of the fans were shattered when the devs announced that they had no such plans. That being said, the makers also shared some other interesting details about the game, assuring fans that there is indeed more to the game.
While it was no secret that Baldur’s Gate 3 was one of the most promising titles way before its release. However, Larian Studios founder Swen Vincke’s recent comments about the game’s length and content further put everything into perspective.
How long is Baldur’s Gate 3?
Recently, at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) panel Vincke spilled the beans about the various dialogue and narration options of Baldur’s Gate 3. He revealed that the game, in fact, has triple the word count of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings books.
Meanwhile, the total cutscene runtime stands twice as long as HBO’s Game of Thrones series. Although he did not share the exact numbers or stats, his comments imply that Baldur’s Gate 3 could have around 1,365,000 words and over 140 hours of cutscenes to watch.
This is significantly massive enough to keep players hooked to the game not just for months but for years to come. Players can easily uncover every secret and moment that each of Larian’s characters has to offer with that much content.
Game of Thrones length
Notably, both The Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones are revered as two of the lengthiest stories in the history of the fantasy genre. Maker, Tolkien’s legendary trilogy, which consists of The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King, collectively contains 455,125 words.
On the other hand, players can easily finish watching all eight seasons of George R.R. Martin’s Game of Thrones show on HBO. It takes around 70 hours to complete all eight seasons.
These stats clearly indicate that Baldur’s Gate 3 has twice the content to offer compared to the Game of Thrones show. Thus even though there are no DLCs or sequels to the game, fans can still keep enjoying the game for years to come.
