That being said, come 2024, the hype and liking for the game has not died yet. Naturally, fans are eagerly looking forward to what developer Larian Studios has to offer in terms of Baldur’s Gate 3. Fans were hopeful of an announcement about a sequel or maybe a DLC to the 2023 Game of the Year. However, the developers have no such things on their minds.

Baldur’s Gate 3 will not have DLCs or sequels

At the recently concluded Game Developers Conference (GDC), Larian Studios founder Swen Vincke broke the hearts of millions of BG3 fans. The founder revealed that the studio has no plans or intentions of releasing any expansions or DLC for Baldur’s Gate 3. Furthermore, there is no Baldur’s Gate 4 on the cards either.

Vincke said that instead, Larian Studios has plans to move away from the Dungeons & Dragons genre and do something new. Thus, the IP would be handed over in the hands of publisher Wizards of the Coast. Vincke said,

“Baldur’s Gate 3 will always have a heart — a warm spot in our hearts. We’ll forever be proud of it, but we’re not going to continue it. We’re not going to make new expansions, which everybody is expecting us to do. We’re not going to make Baldur’s Gate 4, which everybody is expecting us to do. We’re going to move on, we’re going to move away from D&D, and we’re going to start making a new thing.”

Furthermore, Michael Douse, director of publishing at Larian, also confirmed the studio’s plan via a post on X (formerly Twitter). He wrote,

“Had a lot of time to reflect on this incredible adventure as everyone has, and I can’t explain how excited I am for the next. Hope you join us for that!

Vincke also elaborated on the decision in an interview with Gamespot, saying,

“That’s not what we were made for. That’s literally the opposite of what Larian is about. We want to do big, new things. We don’t want to rehash the thing that we’ve done already.”

He shared that initially, the plan was to make more Baldur’s Gate sequels. However, after they decided against it. They now wish to do newer things and make them big.

Fans are happy about Baldur’s Gate 3’s end

The decision of the developer obviously disheartened every Baldur’s Gate 3 fan, as several players expressed their disappointment with the decision. However, there were also a sizable number of fans who lauded Larian’s decision.

“idk why people are so sad about this. They expect games to become series to become franchises by default. Sometimes a game is released and it’s good. Idk”

A user ‘tylersinsta00’ was of the opinion that Larian will hopefully make another beautiful game just under their own IP, which is a good thing. The user said that there is plenty of good Dungeons & Dragons content already out there in case people are looking for more of it.
