Film editing is a bit of a tedious process, and to make the plot more comprehensive and cohesive, a lot of scenes end up on the chopping floor. Mexican actress Eiza Gonzalez learned it the hard way.
Gonzalez has been in the film and television industry for years now. She has come a long way since her lead role in Sueña conmigo, an Argentinian production from Nickelodeon. As she made her way into Hollywood, she quickly realized that she would have to fight for her roles in more ways than one.
When Eiza Gonzalez fought to keep one scene in her film
Eiza Gonzalez slowly made her way into Hollywood with films such as Baby Driver and Bloodshot. She landed the role of Cam Thompson in Ambulance alongside Jake Gyllenhaal in 2022. Aquaman star Yahya Abdul-Mateen was also featured in the film, which revolved around brothers planning a bank heist.
Helmed by Michael Bay, Ambulance was a remake of a Danish film. The actress played a significant role since the brothers had captured her ambulance to get away after the heist. There was one particular scene that stood out, though.
As the high-speed chase played out, the paramedic had to perform abdominal surgery at the back of the van. This particular scene was initially left out of the film, and Gonzalez revealed that she had to fight with the director to keep the scene.
“At one point they completely cut it out of the movie – when I saw a cut [with the scene not in], I called Michael and I said, ‘You can’t cut that scene of the movie’. And he’s like, ‘Why? It just doesn’t work,'” she revealed (via Digital Spy).
Eiza Gonzalez reasoned that the scene was crucial to her character since it gave an insight into why she was the way she was. This move eventually paid off for Gonzalez and Bay, since critics singled out the scene to heap praise.
Eiza Gonzalez opened up about her experience as a Latina in Hollywood
Hollywood has had a long problem with stereotypes, especially when it comes to women. It can be very easy to get typecast as well, which is why Gonzalez does not get carried away by compliments about her looks.
The actress recently opened up about the challenges she has had to overcome to book roles as a Latina. It was greatly disappointing for her since none of her white friends or colleagues had to endure that.
“I just think it’s an overly sexualized idea of a Latin woman. It’s so disappointing and it’s so pathetic,” she said, during an interview with InStyle magazine.
Eiza Gonzalez has done what she can to break free of the notion that she is only an attractive face. She has steadily climbed up the ladder and will star in the 3 Body Problem next.
