Eiza González has become one of the most interesting actresses working today. Over the years she has starred in big films including Baby Driver, Alita: Battle Angel and Bloodshot. In recent years, she started appearing in dramatic roles in films like I Care a Lot and the action thriller Ambulance where she got to show her range as an actress.
González recently addressed the stereotypical nature of Hollywood and their portrayal of Latina women on screen. It seems some people misinterpreted her words and put her in a bad light. The actress gave a stern reply to them through her social media, and reiterated her views.
Eiza González Speaks Out Hollywood Stereotypes Pertaining to Latina Actresses
Eiza González has been in the industry for quite some time now and has seen the industry evolve throughout the years. She is aware of the stereotypical treatment of women in the industry, especially non-white actresses. Being a Latina actress, she addressed the over-sexualized representation of Latina characters in films over the years in an interview with InStyle.
She opened up about how she has always been seen as the sexy and hot Latina woman. This unfortunate type-casting limited her opportunities in Hollywood. González also described how she went through an identity crisis for many years. She said,
“I remember being [told for] so many projects, ‘She’s too pretty for the role. She’s too hot for the role’…I had an identity crisis for a very long time. I was like, ‘Do I shave my head? Do I make myself less attractive? Do I make myself more attractive? Do I not dress super-hot or do I dress super-hot or do I cover myself all the time?’”
Some people seem to have misinterpreted her comments and have criticized her for being too proud and self-indulging (via Daily Mail). González was quick to respond to the negativity on X, where she pointed out the misinformation that was circulating online. She clarified that she was just trying to shed light on the problem of Latina-stereotyping in Hollywood. She wrote,
“Taking things out of context is sad. I never said that I was too hot and didn’t get roles. I was making an observation on what a Latina stereotype has been for years in our industry…As in correlation to stereotypes. It’s sad that words are being taken out of an interview and put in a complete different context.”
González recently opened up about being ”distraught” at losing the role of Catwoman in Robert Pattinson’s The Batman after going through some camera tests for the role (via Comicbook.com). Despite not starring in big tentpole DC or Marvel projects, she is already doing some great projects on her own and her upcoming slate is very exciting and promising.
Eiza González Praises the Creators of 3 Body Problem For Maintaining a Balanced Narrative
Eiza González is gearing up for the release of her new ambitious Netflix series 3 Body Problem. The sci-fi series is the next big project for Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D. B. Weiss and is an adaptation of the novel The Three-Body Problem by Liu Cixin. In an interview with Collider, González talked about the vast and challenging narrative of the series.
She praised the creators for making sure that the story never feels rushed and taking their time to set up the world and its characters. She further pointed out how they managed to successfully put together all the complex aspects of the story and made it understandable for audiences within its 8 episodes. She told Collider,
“There’s a lot to set up, you know. The books are really vast, as she said. A lot to set up, so it’s challenging as a creative and as…anyone– as a writer, as a creative, for the cast, for the crew. I think they do a spectacular job at that because you also don’t want to… you don’t want to speed up the story. You don’t want to move forward too quickly, but you also need to set so many things at once. So it’s a very complicated, you know, we have to give them the credit.”
The series will drop on Netflix on March 21, 2024. In April, González has the release of her new film with Guy Ritchie titled The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. She will star in two other upcoming Ritchie films including the untiled action film starring Henry Cavill and Jake Gyllenhaal, plus, The Fountain of Youth with John Krasinski and Natalie Portman.
