The entire cast of Game of Thrones played their respective roles in such earnestness that many fans would see no one else portraying the parts. This is exactly what happened when author George R.R. Martin envisioned the actor who would play the iconic figure of Tyrion Lannister.
Peter Dinklage never auditioned for the role; instead, Martin and his team offered it to him. The actor’s career before Game of Thrones was a hit and miss, but after he debuted in the famed HBO series, he immediately gained worldwide fame.
George R.R. Martin Badly Wanted Peter Dinklage As Tyrion Lannister
During his interview with TIFF via YouTube, writer George R.R. Martin shared the actors who were so perfect for their Game of Thrones roles, and one of them is Peter Dinklage. He revealed that the actor had no audition tapes whatsoever and the team did not ask for anyone else.
“For Tyrion, Peter Dinklage, you know, that was the one role where we didn’t audition anybody. We didn’t read anybody. There are no tapes of other people reading Tyrion’s roles that will ever surface anywhere because we made no auditions.”
Martin said that they offered the part of Tyrion Lannister to Dinklage and they made sure he would accept it because he had no one else in mind to occupy the role.
“We just said, ‘We got to get Peter Dinklage’, and we went out and made an offer to Peter Dinklage, and we persuaded him to take the role, and that’s worked out well.”
Indeed, Dinklage delivered his performance so well that he emerged as one of the most popular and fan-favorite characters in the show. His character development also became a significant plot in the series.
It’s no wonder why Martin chose the actor as Tyrion Lannister. His dedication to the role made him the only one who can sincerely portray the iconic character.
Peter Dinklage Is Happy That Game Of Thrones Is Done
After years of playing Tyrion Lannister, Peter Dinklage felt relieved that Game of Thrones was over. He was highly praised for his performance, but the actor felt he’s had enough fill. He told The Graham Norton Show:
“Yes [I was relieved that Game of Thrones came to an end]. Yes, I mean it’s time to move on. As hard as it is. That’s the tricky thing about… I mean ,that’s what we do for a living. We go off for a couple of months, and we have great friendships, then you don’t see each other again – and that one was a family.”
His character’s arc was very interesting yet controversial, and he was one of the few figures who miraculously survived the entire story of Game of Thrones.
After Tyrion Lannister was pardoned for his crime, he became the Hand of the King to Bran Stark. What the character lacked in physicality, he made it all up with his wits and strategy.
