Jennifer Lawrence’s popular film franchise, The Hunger Games has extended its universe with a newly released prequel titled, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes. However, this prequel is unable to impress the film market in China despite having a successful box-office run in Hollywood.
Jennifer Lawrence’s The Hunger Games Prequel Becomes a Disappointment in China
Rachel Zegler‘s The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, which debuted at $44 million in the domestic market topped the box office bringing an overall worldwide collection of $98.5 million. Meanwhile, the overseas earnings currently stand at $54.5 million.
But, these box-office figures lack much contribution from one nation i.e., China. As per The Hollywood Reporter, Jennifer Lawrence’s The Hunger Games prequel became a disappointment in China’s box office as it opened in third place over the weekend with an earnings of $4.6 million. Unlike the prequel, all other Lawrence movies in the franchise performed incredibly well at the box office surging past $100 million in its first weekend.
The previous movies have earned a lot better with The Hunger Games (2012) earning a total of $27 million at China’s box office. As for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013), it brought $28 million while The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 and Part 2 brought an overall of $58 million.
Meanwhile, the vice chair of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, Adam Fogelson addressed the box office figures sharing as per USA Today,
“The fact that we’re sitting here at basically $100 million on opening weekend around the world is, I think, a testament to the quality of the movie, the quality of the talent that worked on the movie and a campaign that was both successful and efficient.”
In the evergrowing cinematic world, the major downfall of Chinese audiences for US-generated movies is affecting the overall profits and revenues generated. This weekend’s score is by far down due to the ongoing struggles of US movies witnessed in the Chinese film market. Whereas, the first and second positions at the Chinese box office were occupied by Who’s the Suspect and Be My Family.
