How an Unresolved MCU Arc Could Shake Things Up in Captain America: Brave New World

Hydra made its chilling debut in Captain America: The Winter Soldier as an evil entity. Within the film, it was revealed as a secret project initiated by Arnim Zola during the 1940s, aimed at brainwashing the American soldier James “Bucky” Barnes. Their objective? To transform Barnes into Winter Soldier, using Super Soldier Serum. With high-tech gadgets and sneaky strategies, Hydra wove a tangled web of chaos to seize power wherever it could.

After the events surrounding the Winter Soldier unfolded, Hydra seemed to fade into the background for several years, untouched and unexplored in the MCU. Although their impact was significant, particularly during the early stages of Phase 2, the organization’s fate remained uncertain, in the universe at least.

While much of Hydra’s story was in fact cleared up in the TV series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., it’s worth noting that the show’s canon status within the MCU remains foggy. Thus it can most definitely rear its Hydra-shaped head time and again, much like in the comic book realm.

And therefore, the prospect of Hydra resurfacing as a threat in the upcoming Captain America: Brave New World shouldn’t be dismissed easily. With their track record, the shadow of Hydra could once again loom large over the MCU.

What Can the Fans Anticipate from Captain America: Brave New World?

Initially, the film was named Captain America: New World Order, and was further renamed to Captain America: Brave New World, is confirmed to continue the story of Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson after he assumes the Captain America mantle following the events of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.

Marvel till now has kept tight-lipped about the plot. However, director Julias Onah hinted at a “paranoid thriller” vibe during a discussion about the movie at the 2022 San Diego Comic-Con. Producer Nate Moore revealed to Collider,

“Well, look, Sam Wilson’s Captain America, he is going to bring his own team to play… There will be some natural sparks there, which I think will be really fun.”

Till now it appears that Brave New World might follow a path similar to Captain America: The Winter Soldier, at least the fans speculate, probably diving into themes of political corruption. While the Captain America films have often explored these themes, it is still now unclear how everything will play out.
