Technically, 2012’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 was the first game to set up the story in a future setting but Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare took players way further into the future, particularly between 2054 and 2061. As for the game’s story, not everyone was a huge fan of it mainly because of the predictable plot.

There were mixed reactions but everyone agreed that the game was better than its predecessor, Call of Duty: Ghosts, which was heavily criticized for predictive and boring single-player campaign. In the end, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare played a key role in paving the way for future Call of Duty games and at the same time, proved to be very financially beneficial for the studios as the game was one of the best-selling games of 2014.
