Carey Mulligan has done a commendable job in portraying Bradley Cooper’s on-screen wife, Felicia Montealegre in Maestro. The movie ended up getting seven Oscar nominations including the Best Actress category for the former.
Her performance stole the spotlight which even got acknowledged during the awards season. However, she seemingly ended up targeting actors who say awards don’t matter.
Carey Mulligan Slams Actors for ‘100% Lying’ About Awards Don’t Matter!
Mulligan portrays the role of Felicia Montealegre, wife of Bradley Cooper’s character, Leonard Bernstein in the Netflix biopic, Maestro. The movie revolves around their complex relationship who had three children together, despite her husband being gay. Throughout their marriage, they have supported one another in their careers.
This role called for an “intense preparation” for the former as she told Screendaily how her co-star and director, Cooper wanted him to go all in.
“Bradley was quite clear. He said, ‘I want you to do this, but I need you to go all in with me.’ I wanted to do Felicia justice. But I’d never done all in.”
An Education star, Carey Mulligan who never went to drama school found the thought of letting go embarrassing at first but she eventually went ahead with it.
“I’ve never done it because I thought it would be embarrassing or I’d do it badly. I wish I could burst into tears and lie down on the floor and pretend to be a leopard. But I decided, with Bradley, I was going to burst into tears and pretend to be a leopard. So I did.”
Eventually, her hard work paid off. The BAFTA awardee, Carey Mulligan, told The Times of London that she felt her Oscar nomination for her role is quite the “coolest thing.”
She shared,
“(It) is just the coolest thing. Because it’s from your peers. It’s wicked.”
She also commented that the actors who claim awards don’t matter are “100% lying.” Though she did not name any actor in her statement, she acknowledged how awards nominations are something quite cool. For the unversed, actors like Tom Cruise and Marlon Brando had quite a history with awards shows with the latter even rejecting his award in quite an unexpected way.
Tom Cruise and Marlon Brando’s Connection With the Oscars
Both the stars have cemented an incredible legacy in Hollywood. While Cruise has continued to reign the industry with his hit movies, particularly in the action genre, Brando has given irreplaceable masterpieces in the cinematic world. However, when it comes to their connection with the Academy Awards, it is quite different.
The Top Gun star is quite focused on making great movies for the audiences which he reflected on when he skipped attending the 95th Academy Awards. While his movie Top Gun: Maverick was up for 6 nominations at the event, he was absent due to overseas production on his eighth Mission: Impossible installment.
Whereas, Brando rejected the Best Actor Award at the 45th Academy Awards which he won for his performance in The Godfather. He even chose to stay absent from the award show with Sacheen Littlefeather attending the ceremony on his behalf.
She told the audience (via The Hollywood Reporter) that Brando “very regretfully cannot accept this very generous award.”
He boycotted the Oscars ceremony in protest of how Native Americans were portrayed in Hollywood. He also expressed his support for the American Indian Movement (AIM) and reference to the ongoing occupation at Wounded Knee, in which 200 members of AIM faced off against thousands of U.S. military forces in the South Dakota town.
Meanwhile, Maestro is streaming on Netflix.
