The superhero universes of Marvel and DC have a lot in store for fans this year, with an exhilarating lineup of movies and TV shows. The battle between superheroes and villains is set to captivate fans. It is also expected to redefine such franchises, following what is considered a disappointing year for the superhero genre. The range of shows and movies varies from Marvel’s Deadpool 3 to James Gunn introducing the world to his new DCU with Creatures Commandos.
Marvel’s Movies and TV Shows to be Released in 2024
2023 has not been the most amazing year for Marvel Studios. From recording its lowest opening weekend with The Marvels and the subsequent firing of Kang actor Jonathan Majors, everything is certainly expected to affect one of the biggest superhero franchises, the MCU.
It has also been believed to be the reason the studio has cut down on its lineup, with only one movie being released in 2024, Deadpool 3. However, considering the anticipation surrounding Hugh Jackman’s return as Wolverine and finally seeing Deadpool and the X-Men together, the movie is expected to lay down a positive landmark for the franchise.
Apart from Deadpool 3, the studio is also releasing two live-action MCU TV series. The Hawkeye spinoff, Echo, starring Alaqua Cox, is set to feature a Daredevil cameo before the much-anticipated series Born Again. After making her MCU debut in WandaVision, Kathryn Hahn is set to return with her mischiefs in Disney+’s Agatha All Along.
A new Black Panther spin-off animated series, Eyes of Wakanda, is also expected to be released this year. Another animated series, X-Men ‘97, is set to release this year, which would be a follow-up of the classic X-Men: The Animated Series, picking up where it left off. Apart from the MCU, the Spider-Man Universe is also expected to see multiple releases this year.
Dakota Johnson’s Madame Web and Tom Hardy’s Venom 3 are set to release in February and November, respectively. Sony is also releasing Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Kraven the Hunter and an animated series titled Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, previously known as Spider-Man: Freshman Year. Some other series are also expected to be released. However, nothing is certain about them so far.

James Gunn’s DCU And Elseworlds Stories
With Jason Momoa’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom bringing the DC Extended Universe to an end, James Gunn is set to introduce his vision for the DC Universe. While the first film under the franchise is set to release in 2025, the studio is embarking on the new DCU with the animated series Creature Commandos.
The very first entry in the DCU’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters features an ensemble cast, including David Harbour, Indira Varma, Frank Grillo, and Sean Gunn. Created by the DC Studios co-CEO, the series follows a black ops team of monsters assembled by Amanda Waller.
While the new DCU might not see another release this year, fans would get plenty of DC stories with the Elseworlds movies and shows. Todd Phillips is bringing back Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker alongside Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn in the much-awaited sequel Joker: Folie à Deux. The film is set to release on October 4, 2024.
After making an impact in Matt Reeves’ The Batman Colin Farrell is returning as Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot in a spin-off series titled, The Penguin. Expected to release in late 2024, the show is expected to pick up after The Batman and is set to follow The Penguin’s rise to power in Gotham City’s criminal underworld.
Despite a relatively lower number of releases from both DC and Marvel in 2024, titles like Deadpool 3 and Joker: Folie à Deux, are expected to make a remarkable impact at the box office, followed by a superhero fatigue-stricken year for the genre.
