Showrunner J.T. Rogers adapted the series from Adelstein’s book Tokyo Vice: An American Reporter on the Police Beat in Japan. Rogers will also pen the finale episode of the season, making fans excited for some great twists and turns. The finale is expected to address 2 major mysteries.

Mystery 1: Who Started The Meicho Office Fire?

The Meicho Office fire is perhaps the longest-standing mystery in the season. The fire happened in the first episode of Season 2, destroying the Yoshino tape and its copies found by Ansel Elgort‘s Jake Adelstein. The tape held crucial evidence of Polina’s death at the hands of Tozawa in his luxurious boat Yoshino.

It was hinted that an insider at Meicho may have started the fire, who has an allegiance to Tozawa. By episode 6, Eimi, Jake’s supervisor and senior journalist, starts suspecting her nationalist boss Baku. The hated character supports right-wing interests just like Tozawa and Eimi learns of his potential association with Tozawa from her romantic interest, Shingo.

Shingo also reveals to Eimi that Baku has been on the payroll of the right-wing Yakuza clan for quite some time. Since Baku also had access across the Meicho Office, he could’ve easily started the fire.

It’s a narrow possibility that anyone other than Baku had the means and motives to commit such a gruesome crime. Unless someone was threatened or bribed into starting the fire.

Mystery 2: What Were Oyabun Ishida’s Last Words To Akira Sato?

The leader of the Chihara-kai yakuza clan, Hitoshi Ishida, was brutally attacked by two assassins in the fifth episode. In the final scene of Ishida in the series, he pulls Sato closer and whispers something in his ear that remains a mystery until now. In the series, Sato was the only one in the clan whom Ishida could trust.

Many speculated that Ishida’s words had something to do with positioning Sato as the next Oyabun of the Chihara-kai clan. One common theory suggests that Oyabun Ishida could’ve mentioned the combination of a safe behind his desk to Sato.

According to this theory, the safe would contain handwritten evidence that would make Sato the next Oyabun. Without this evidence, Show Kasamatsu’s character would become the second in command to the temporary Oyabun Hayama.

Hayama is also suspected to be involved in the assassination of Oyabun Ishida. It is possible that Ishida may have stored some evidence against Hayama in his safe. Only the finale could tell if what Ishida told Sato could make him the Oyabun and protect the Chihara Kai legacy.

Tokyo Vice Season 2 finale will decide the fate of Jake, Katagiri, Sato, and Tozawa. Fans will mainly look forward to the finale for the epic showdown between Jake and Tozawa. The villain is set to become the most powerful person in Japan, with influence over the next Prime Minister Shigematsu, unless Jake puts a stop to his deeds. Fans hope that the finale will end Tozawa’s reign of terror.

The second season will end with 10 episodes in total, two more than the first season (via ScreenRant). There has been no update about a potential third season. Tokyo Vice Season 2 finale episode will drop exclusively on Max on April 4, 2024.
