As the world is finally accepting the tradition of Live-Action adaptation of their popular anime and manga series after the success of One Piece, there was still a time when live-action adaptations of series such as Attack on Titan and Bleach became a curse for their respective franchises.
The live-action adaptations have the longest failure line, despite the name of the series or anime. In this long list, one of the most prominent ones is the Attack on Titan live-action adaptation. Attack on Titan live-action was a 2015 Japanese post-apocalyptic action film based on the manga of the series and was directed by Shinji Higuchi.
Attack on Titan is a gigantic name in the anime and manga industry, still, the name of the franchise could not stop the live-action series from becoming a box-office nightmare. There were two major reasons why Attack on Titan live-action flopped and could not live up to the name of one of the best anime and manga series of all time.
1. Casting Japanese Actors For Characters From Different Origins
The series’ characters have names that have roots in Germanic, English, and Asian history, even though the characters’ diversity has never been disclosed. Fans of the show are left with the impression that the characters come from various backgrounds as a result. But Japanese actors were chosen for the roles of a diverse cast of characters in the Attack on Titan film which became a big reason for the fans not liking the live-action.
Ayame Misaki, Rina Takeda, Satomi Ishihara, Pierre Taki, Jun Kunimura, Haruma Miura, Ryota Ozawa, Hiroki Hasegawa, Kiko Mizuhara, Kanata Hongō, Takahiro Miura, Nanami Sakuraba, Satoru Matsuo, Shu Watanabe, and Nanami Sakuraba were among those who appeared in Attack on Titan.
This was one of the biggest reasons why Attack on Titan’s live-action movie failed on a grand scale and couldn’t perform well at the box office.
CGI And Character Development Was Too Poor
The characters’ complicated emotions are simplified in this live-action movie, which instead presents them as naive, conceited youngsters. The portrayal of Eren Yeager in the live-action version, which showed him as a helpless character who is most hurt by the circumstances rather than the irate and Titan-hating character shown in the anime and manga, was one of the things that infuriated fans.
Another aspect that became the reason for the hate towards the Attack on Titan live-action was the fact that the series did not have proper CGI and editing, which resulted in the people feeling bleak emotions from the characters too.
Although now the curse of live-action has finally been removed thanks to the brilliant CGI and better understanding of the script and storyline of anime and manga series, it is highly unlikely that Attack on Titan will ever get a live-action series or movie anymore.
