Since the end of Attack on Titan, fans have been trying to answer many questions and mysteries that were left in the story over 10 years. It is very common for manga writers to leave some aspects of the plot unattended so that viewers can have their interpretation of the story, and that’s what Hajime Isayama did with Attack on Titan.
One of the major mysteries that Isayama left unanswered is why Ymir Fritz chose Eren of all people and formed a connection with him. This is a big question in the storyline and no one knows why Ymir chose Eren and gave him the power of the Founding Titan in the first place.
Although it is a big question, Isayama never directly explained this aspect of the story, and thus, fans were left to interpret and theorize on their own. However, there might be an unusual connection between Eren and Ymir that may have become the reason for Ymir to choose Eren for her goals.
Ymir and her Importance in Attack on Titan
The first person to harness the power of the Titans was Ymir Fritz. She served as the slave of the Eldian king, who exploited her influence to make Eldia prosperous at the expense of Marley and the rest of the world.
After she died, Ymir was brought to the Coordinate, where she used her powers to shape Titans from the sand and submitted to the royal family whenever they wanted to use the Founder’s authority. As was indicated multiple times throughout the narrative, Ymir had been a slave her entire life, primarily being used and mistreated by those in her immediate vicinity.
It is impossible to overstate her impact on Eren, especially in light of her personal history and relationship with King Fritz. However, one thing that held the biggest question was why she chose Eren of all people. What was the unusual connection she developed with Eren that made her choose him? And the answer to this question is Eren’s desire for freedom.
The Unusual Connection Between Ymir and Eren
Ymir has spent her entire life being used by those in the closest area to him. For centuries, she had been King Fritz’s slave, subjected to cruelty and being used to create Titans, all of which likely drove her insane.
The realization that she had free will came from Eren, who was also the first to treat her like a human being. Eren also harbored a great desire for freedom, which Ymir had sought for more than 2,000 years. Ymir realized Eren had potential because of his fixation with freedom.
Since they had a unique bond because they were both slaves in different ways, Ymir decided to choose Eren. Because it establishes Eren’s motivation for the rest of the story and significantly alters the tone of the entire series, Eren and Ymir’s connection on the Paths is likely one of the most significant moments in Attack on Titan’s history.
