Warner Bros. and DC Films are eyeing The Shallows director Jaume Collet-Serra to take on the Black Adam movie starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. After the critical response from audiences for both Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad, the DCEU might have just found their salvation. Aquaman topped the box office with a whopping $1 billion and Shazam! hailed by certain reviews as the best DC movie in the present.
As a proof of a promising future, Warner Bros. and DC Films have already laid their roster of upcoming movies for the coming years. Such titles include Birds of Prey spinoff starring Margot Robbie, an alternate universe Joker played by Joaquin Phoenix, and sequels to their blockbuster films, namely Wonder Woman 1984 and Aquaman 2.
Originally, director Jaume Collet-Sera was supposed to work on the Suicide Squad sequel but then had to pass it on to work on another project where Johnson is also set to star, Disney’s Jungle Cruise. The torch was handed to Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn. Collet-Sera is now back to shepherd the much-anticipated Black Adam movie after the success of Shazam!
Johnson was planned to appear in Shazam! to play as the super-villain in 2014. That plan changed as the script developed to be an origin story for Billy Batson. Johnson suggested to separate the characters and push for a solo Black Adam movie. Writer Adam Sztykiel was hired to pen the script, but the fact that no director has been officially chosen and Johnson’s jam-packed schedule getting in the way, there was no certainty of going before the camera.
After Collet-Sera joined the team, the movie is set to begin filming next year. Few details are known about the plot but one major theory that fans hope to see is a prequel story that explores his origin. One scene between Billy and The Wizard in Shazam! gave the audience a lot of information that were not expounded properly. The Black Adam prequel might just be the perfect time and place to go in-depth with this.
Reports also stated that Hawkman and fellow JSA members Atom Smasher and Stargirl will make an appearance in the Black Adam movie. If this happens, we might encounter how the JSA helped fight against Black Adam.
While Black Adam’s future with DC looks as exciting as it seems, it still needs a few more films in between before any confrontations with Shazam happen. Since he is not currently residing in the presently shared universe, we can only assume he is locked somewhere else.
