Hogwarts Legacy was one of the highly-anticipated games and was released in February 2023. The game is set in the 1800s, a century before the events in J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter novels, and takes place in multiple locations of the Wizarding World such as Hogwarts Castle and Hogsmeade. The game received worldwide praise and mostly positive reviews from players and critics alike.

In a conversation with Variety, WB Games revealed that the game has sold over 22 million copies in 2023 and has become the best-selling game of the year, ending the reign of heavy-weight titles like FIFA and Call of Duty. The company also added that out of 22 million sales, 2 million of the sales were during the holiday season. The game also broke sales records in the United Kingdom.

WB Interactive Entertainment president David Haddad stated that he is proud of the sales but also that the game has delighted the fans. He added that the game presented Harry Potter to players in a new way where players can be who they want and developer Avalanche set out to do exactly that and it has gone well with the fans. He added that they are proud to “break into the top ranks.”

Haddad also revealed that the publisher is planning to expand the “Potterverse” video game world. He said that the Quidditch stand-alone game called Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions which was announced back in April 2023 is already in the beta-testing phase and stated that there is no information on when the game could be released but it is being made to delight the fans.

He further added that there is also “a series of other things” currently unannounced but are under development which will let players immerse in “the world and stories and characters in deeper and deeper ways.” Players are already speculating that there will be a sequel of Hogwarts Legacy sometime in the future after its stellar performance and it doesn’t seem something too far-fetched.

He also mentioned that these games have an important role in keeping the franchises relevant and exciting for fans. The success of Hogwarts Legacy could have not come at a better time for Warner Brothers as the company was dealing with the utter failure of the DCEU despite having some of the most iconic superheroes at the center.

An array of bad creative decisions and inconsistencies and, a lack of visions for the project led to the failure of the DC Extended Universe, and Hogwarts Legacy has given Warner Brothers a fresh start and the company now looks to build and thrive on it.
