One Piece is the most successful shōnen series ever, with a record number of manga sales. When the news regarding its live-action adaptation came to light, fans went absolutely nuts over it. When the live-action film was released, it absolutely outshined other shows on the platform and remained the top show on Netflix for weeks. It managed to earn a decent score in the books of One Piece diehard fans and has broken the curse of flop anime live actions.
The showrunners Matt Owens and Steve Maeda should be credited for creating a live-action which, contrary to popular belief, was an absolute masterpiece. They worked hard with the Mangaka of the series, Eiichiro Oda. Even though the series turned out to be absolutely perfect, there were people who didn’t like the show as it didn’t hit the mark for them. They pointed out several mistakes, and here are three such points.
Too Old Characters and CGI Complications
We know that most characters in the shōnen series, whether manga or anime, were just teenagers. They were filled with energy and enthusiasm to the brim. The choice of cast wasn’t initially appreciated by the fans as the characters are shown as adults.
Fans later appreciated the cast and series all in all. However, there were some CGI discrepancies in the series. The series boasted refined quality of VFX in the majority of the sequences. Fans even called it better than other live actions, but fans did not love it that much. For example, in the scene where Mihawk cuts the ship.
Essential scenes were cut out and the story was changed
A prime example of a crucial scene being deleted from the One Piece live-action is the iconic scene of Zoro in the Arlong Park arc. It featured Zoro fighting most of the fishermen in a mere matter of minutes while waiting for Luffy. It was the best scene from the arc, and fans were not happy to see it being removed from the live-action. There were several other events that were not included in the live-action series.
With that being said, removing some crucial events from the series implies changes in the entire storyline. The live-action received a lot of criticism for that. Garp was introduced quite early in the series, and fans didn’t like it. This was quite different from the source material and changed the majority of the story.
Cultural changes
The live-action adaptation wasn’t able to portray the culture of various characters properly. Several characters had changed ethnicities in the live-action. Even though this might not be a big deal for many, fans did not like it. The change in the ethnicity did not sit well with many as it has been a huge debate in the industry for a while now.
