James Gunn has found Kal-El’s adoptive Earth parents for his upcoming DCU film, Superman. Neva Howell takes over from Daine Lane as Martha Kent and Pruitt Taylor Vince has landed the role of Jonathan Kent. The role of Superman’s mother was also portrayed by Phyllis Thaxter in the 1978 film and Eva Marie Saint in the 2006 film. The Georgia-born actress joined the production of Gunn’s film, currently progressing in her hometown.
Gunn renamed his film from Superman: Legacy to Superman while making the announcement of the film’s start of production on February 29. The film will be the first to come out of the first chapter of the DC Universe, Gods and Monsters.

According to Deadline, James Gunn has cast Neva Howell in the role of Martha Kent and Pruitt Taylor Vince as Jonathan Kent in DCU’s Superman. It is the latest casting announcement from the film which began production by the end of February. Vince has played several character roles in movies and series, including The Walking Dead, Constantine, and The Mentalist.
Howell also has a list of films and TV projects to her credit, some of which may convince you that she could play the endearing adoptive mother of Clark Kent, played by David Corenswet in the DCU.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul (2017)
In this standalone feature in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, Neva Howell played the brief role of a farmer. Unfortunately, the film was the least popular in the franchise, grossing $40 million at the box office (via Box Office Mojo).
My Fellow Americans (1996)
Howell had a rather small role as Charlene, the Budget Agent, in this American political comedy film. It tells the story of feuding ex-presidents, played by Jack Lemmon and James Garner.

Howell was also part of this star-studded heist comedy film by Ocean’s Eleven director Steven Soderbergh. She is credited as the ‘woman on the news #1’ in the film.
Howell’s other film credits include Fever Dreams, October Sky, and Ghosts of the Ozarks. She has also made appearances in television series, including The Originals, The Resident, and Mercy Street.
The Cast Of James Gunn’s Superman
In an Instagram post from February, James Gunn shared a photo where he posed alongside the cast of Superman, who appeared for the table read of the film. David Corenswet will follow in the footsteps of Christopher Reeve, Brandon Routh, and Henry Cavill to play the titular role in the DCU. Rachel Brosnahan will take over the role of Lois Lane from Amy Adams.
Nicholas Hoult was cast in the role of Superman’s nemesis, Lex Luthor. The other confirmed cast members of the film include Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Terence Rosemore as Otis, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, and Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl.
James Gunn’s Superman will hit the theaters on July 11, 2025.
