The Halo franchise is getting another game according to a recent Reddit post. Under this speculation, the editor-in-chief of Seasoned Gaming, Ains, has received information regarding the next game. It seems that the next entry is a single-player storyline.
While fans were expecting a DLC to the last game, Halo Infinite, we can now shift our expectations to something a bit more massive.
Halo’s Next Game – All That We Know So Far
In recent times, 343i had a change in its restructuring, following founder Bonnie Ross’ exit from the studio. This process saw some laying off and a change in work ethic. Based on an SG Bitcast 269 podcast, Ains said the following:
Do I have any info on the Halo campaign? The short answer is nothing specific. What I can say, what I know anyway, is that yes, they do have a team working on the next Halo campaign. It is part of the restructuring that is building the next generation of Halo on Unreal.
I think I told a friend the other day that the earliest I would expect to see another Halo single-player campaign outside of Firefight and stuff they’re doing in Infinite, is a couple of years. It’s going to be a while so don’t hold your breath.
The last entry in the series, Halo Infinite, was a departure from a lot of traditional gameplay mechanics and served as a ‘reboot’ for the series. It followed an open-world approach where players could experience more than just a linear campaign structure. Even though this trial-and-error appealed to many players, in its current state, the game has ‘mixed’ reviews on Steam.
Halo Infinite Has Had a Turbulent Journey
During its launch, the game had quite a lot missing from its vanilla state. Content like Co-op and Forge didn’t exist, and it came as a surprise to players who’ve been long-time fans of the series. Over time, the game has been updated through different patches and content updates. This closely follows a live-service model that many multiplayer games do today.
However, players have been upset due to the game’s ‘challenges’ that don’t really test the player’s skills and make the multiplayer gameplay somewhat of a grind. On top of a fully paid campaign, players have to pay extra for the premium battle pass.
With the next game, the studio can pay more attention to these details and possibly bring a campaign that is closer to the game’s roots. This also includes multiplayer changes and overhauls to the live-service model along with quality-of-life updates.
In the comments, a Redditor by the name of Awkwardmeerkat44 puts their trust in 343 Industries’ potential to make a great Halo game in the future:
Considering 343’s recent leadership shake up. I think I’m willing to give them another chance, the recent updates to infinite have been really good and the guy who lead the charge on fixing MCC is at the helm of the studio now.
At the time of writing, Halo Infinite’s next season, ‘Reckoning’ arrives on October 17. The new update features a new mode, new maps, Flood-themed customization, and a streamlined 50-tier Premium battle pass, among other things.
A striking new feature is the Forge AI Toolkit. It encourages players to create their own PvE experiences. This toolkit lets players make and share their unique experiences using Campaign AI in Forge. This will allow creators to make use of functions like spawning AI, and how AI navigates and even use node graphs that let them control managing AI.
According to Michael Schorr, the Forge Lead Designer at 343 Industries:
Our North Star for the Forge AI Toolkit was wave-based PvE experiences. Firefight, Horde; things like that are what we expect players will lean into first when they create stuff, but it also has the capacity to do more linear experiences.
It’s certainly an exciting time to be a Halo fan, wouldn’t you agree?
